Erg IQ

Installation & Configuration

ErgIQ can be installed from the Connect IQ store using the link below. Once installed, a limited set of application settings are available for the user to adjust. These settings as well as the pairing procedure are outlined in the user manual.

Requirements

ErgIQ will connect to a compatible fitness equipment system, the following is currently supported:

  • Concept2 Rower/SkiErg with PM5 (Firmware v22.015/156/722 or greater)

Known Issues

This is a BETA and therefore it has some items being worked through. For issues relating to FIT recording, pairing or Garmin Connect, even if they are listed here please report that you have the issue as well. This will help accurately determine the scale of the problem.

  • workout metrics are incorrect: distance, calories, stroke count (upgrade PM5 to BETA v22.014 or greater using C2 Utility if your comfortable doing this, otherwise it will be fixed in the next release)
  • Fenix3, FR920XT, and vivoactive HR have issues pairing (see post #4 for temporary workarounds until resolved)
  • vivoactive doesn't save last lap and session data correctly (issue being investigated)
  • Garmin Connect doesn't integrate developer FIT fields using native number mapping for summary, laps, or record fields

Non-Garmin FIT Analysis Sites

ErgIQ takes advantage of the newer defined developer FIT fields. These fields are a new standard that are not currently recognized at all non-Garmin sites. The following sites are known to work but others may work as well, this is not an exhaustive listing:

I'm out of band at the moment but this is more likely a issue with the FWv22 downgrade than the version of ErgIQ. I'll track down what I can but I would suggest if you can get it the PM5 v22.015 beta firmware at this time.

I can confirm that since trying the general release version and upgrading the firmware to v22.023 again that I am able to connect the fenix 3 to the PM5 and record data to the watch using Erg IQ.

I'm wondering about a couple things: I notice that calories are not showing up in Connect Mobile/on the watch, and that the activity does not affect the cumulative intensity minutes either. Are these dependent on having the heart rate source being selected to the watch rather than the performance monitor?
  • I'm looking at adding MO2 support to the application, is there anyone here using a MO2 Sensor?
  • I've been in touch with the developer for the PM5 firmware; he stated that the versions v22.015 wouldn't make a difference in my situation, regardless...

On his suggestions, after cycling power on/off (which I had previously done to no avail) I deleted and re-installed the Erg IQ application. This seems to have worked. I can confirm that on the general release version 22 I am able to connect the fenix 3 with the PM5, row, and record the data to Garmin Connect using Erg IQ app.

I have not tried out v22.015 or v22.023 (part of me is saying, if it works, why fix it?) but I just wanted to know out of curiosity how much of a difference (and what) these versions make for you with regards to the code and functionality of Erg IQ.

Thanks again for your help and for developing this app! I think the rowing community is an underserved population within the Garmin ecosystem and I'm looking forward to future iterations of Erg IQ!

There are numerous fixes in both the current ErgIQ version and all BETA updates through version V22.015 of the PM5 firmware, its best to keep up to date on all versions here as all the issues get ironed out. Users have also experienced issues related to the install from the Connect store, one being updating the software using Garmin Mobile resets all the user settings meaning they need to be updated again. For brevity I'm not going to enumerate the outstanding Connect issues with viewing your workout. Thanks for the support and hopefully you'll get continued use from it!

Not now Jason or ANY time soon...not even close to mine or even my coach's radar - thank you for asking

Sounds good, I'm working through a code clean-up and modification but once ready I'll get you a build to test out.

Garmin Connect compatibility with Concept2 data

This comment is intended for the folks on the Garmin Connect end:

Hopefully the Garmin Connect ecosystem can bend a little bit to enabling rowing specific fields and unit parameters so that all of the information captured by ErgIQ from a workout can be utilized and viewed in Connect. This is something the rowing community needed for a long time!

    Thanks!

I second this request, please enable rowing specific fields.

It took some wrangling but I've got it working now and recording. Due to memory restrictions I'll be removing the session values listing the PM type and ErgIQ version which was vanity information anyways and didn't really provide much value whereas for some users the SmO2 and Thb values provide a good value. Initially and for 1.X devices only one SmO2 sensor will be allowed but possibly in the future multiple sensors might be supported on 2.X devices and provide for body location specification. The 2.X devices have more memory and right now I don't manage them separately but it is possible in the future as memory increases these removed session values may come back for those devices. Hopefully I'll have tested it enough over the next couple days to release the next BETA.
