Erg IQ

Installation & Configuration

ErgIQ can be installed from the Connect IQ store using the link below. Once installed, a limited set of application settings are available for the user to adjust. These settings as well as the pairing procedure are outlined in the user manual.

Requirements

ErgIQ will connect to a compatible fitness equipment system, the following is currently supported:

  • Concept2 Rower/SkiErg with PM5 (Firmware v22.015/156/722 or greater)

Known Issues

This is a BETA and therefore it has some items being worked through. For issues relating to FIT recording, pairing or Garmin Connect, even if they are listed here please report that you have the issue as well. This will help accurately determine the scale of the problem.

  • workout metrics are incorrect: distance, calories, stroke count (upgrade PM5 to BETA v22.014 or greater using C2 Utility if your comfortable doing this, otherwise it will be fixed in the next release)
  • Fenix3, FR920XT, and vivoactive HR have issues pairing (see post #4 for temporary workarounds until resolved)
  • vivoactive doesn't save last lap and session data correctly (issue being investigated)
  • Garmin Connect doesn't integrate developer FIT fields using native number mapping for summary, laps, or record fields

Non-Garmin FIT Analysis Sites

ErgIQ takes advantage of the newer defined developer FIT fields. These fields are a new standard that are not currently recognized at all non-Garmin sites. The following sites are known to work but others may work as well, this is not an exhaustive listing:

ErgIQ Reviews or Other Information

  • Intervals Variable Activity

Can you both send me the /GARMIN/APPS/LOGS/CIQ_LOG.TXT file on the device to review in PM?

I've just sent you the file in PM.

  • Hi,

I have tried the Intervals Variable activities but got some problems.
    Configuration:
    FR235:
    -> v7.10 + ANT 2.40.
Garmin HRM 3 Premium Heart Rate Monitor Chest Strap.
    - Only connected to the FR235 (not to the PM5).

    Concept2 PM5:
    - tested with v22 and beta v22 build 17.

    Activity:
    - 10x Distance intervals with 1000 meters each + 1 minute resting time.

Pairing with PM5 and FR235 works fine in the beginning.
After the first resting time and starting a new interval, I got the Erg App logo in the FR235 and the sync between the PM5 and FR235 is lost (light behind the PM5 started flashing in a higher rate). It looks like there is some kind of timeout due to the resting time.

BTW, other activities (no intervals) are working fine.

I would like to get some more information about the process you are using. Can you confirm that you aren't using any outside software (RowPro, etc) to manage the workouts on the PM5? When this happens and you look at the memory on the PM5, how do the intervals appear? Are they one workout with multiple active/rest segments or individual workouts of 1000m and no corresponding workout for the rest interval? I'm trying to determine if the monitor is viewing these as individual workouts or one larger workout with intervals? Thanks!

No third party software. Only the FR235 + PM5.
After the problem the PM5 continues to log the activity and in the Memory option I can see one workout with multiple active/rest segments.

Can you also confirm you are running 1.0.0-BETA-12 of the ErgIQ application? If you are running that version, did you upgrade from a version of 1.0.0-BETA-10 or previous? If so, there were some issues due to settings changes and needs to have the settings saved or a possible re-install. This is most likely not the issue you are encountering but want to rule out all of the variances for testing purposes. Can you also provide a list of the steps your doing to configure the workout so I can work on reproducing this. The PM5 provides many different ways to configure a interval workout. Also, during the rest interval, do you continue to row or you stop immediately and don't row again until the next interval?
  • For the time being it is not possible (with Connect IQ) to map developer data fields (Erg IQ) with native data field (HR, cadence, speed, distance, power, ..).
then in the meantime i use FFRT to map these fields in the Garmin .fit File.
Not very nice process but at least after this mapping you can display the rowing data on top in garmin connect.

    What is FFRT?
  • What is FFRT?

He is referring to the Fit File Repair Tool. It can be used to read the developer data ErgIQ adds to the FIT file and maps it directly in the native fields in the FIT file. This causes everything to work perfectly in Connect for the data but adds an additional step.
  • Intervals Variable Activity

Yes. I am running 1.0.0-BETA-12 of the ErgIQ app. But I really don't remember from what version I upgraded from...
    Steps for configuring the activity:
1 - Turn OFF and ON FR235. Connect Garmin Strap to FR235.
2 - Turn on PM5. Access the ErgIQ App and go to the Monitor Display.
3 - Connect FR235 (ErgIQ) to the PM5 (Turn Wireless On -> Connect with ANT+). Confirm connection.
    4 - Menu -> Select Workout -> New Workout -> Intervals -> Intervals: Variable -> Distance
    5 - Change Distance to 1000 meters.
6 - Change Resting Time to 1 minute.
7 - Create Ten intervals with the same configuration.
    8 - No More Intervals.
    9 - Start the Activity.

During the rest interval I stop immediately and don't row again until next interval.
I've just confirmed that the previous version was 1.0.0-BETA-10. I've done a reinstall of the app just in case.

    I have attached the CIQ_LOG.TXT from a 10x 1000 meters + 1m resting activity.
Got the IQ! logo right after starting the third interval. I've exited the activity and waited the PM5 to turn off.
After that I manually exited the ErgIQ app.

I've done a master reset of the FR235 and install the 1.0.0-BETA-13.
The Intervals Variable Activity described above worked fine until the end and did not get the IQ! logo.
One thing I've noticed (after the exercise) was that the Data Recording changed from Every Second to Smart during the reset. So, I ran the activity with the Smart option. But I don't know if this could have impacted in the outcome. I will ran another one tomorrow.

  • By way of an update, tried ErgIQ again on my VAHR. Connected just fine (run PM5, then run ErgIQ, then exit ErgIQ and run it again, that's when it pairs). The output presentation has improved. There are several nonsensical metrics such as stroke rate (it's correct in the IQ output section) and DPS, there is no power metric. Attaching screenshots alongside the same session recorded by Forerunner 610.

Thanks for the feedback, the images show what I would expect given the way Connect currently handles developer data in the FIT file. Although this isn't optimal the FIT file can be used at some third party sites to fully analyze the data. As for power, I'm hoping to have that released in some form in the near future, I know users are looking for it.
