Erg IQ

Installation & Configuration

ErgIQ can be installed from the Connect IQ store using the link below. Once installed, a limited set of application settings are available for the user to adjust. These settings as well as the pairing procedure are outlined in the user manual.

Requirements

ErgIQ will connect to a compatible fitness equipment system, the following is currently supported:

  • Concept2 Rower/SkiErg with PM5 (Firmware v22.015/156/722 or greater)

Known Issues

This is a BETA and therefore it has some items being worked through. For issues relating to FIT recording, pairing or Garmin Connect, even if they are listed here please report that you have the issue as well. This will help accurately determine the scale of the problem.

  • workout metrics are incorrect: distance, calories, stroke count (upgrade PM5 to BETA v22.014 or greater using C2 Utility if your comfortable doing this, otherwise it will be fixed in the next release)
  • Fenix3, FR920XT, and vivoactive HR have issues pairing (see post #4 for temporary workarounds until resolved)
  • vivoactive doesn't save last lap and session data correctly (issue being investigated)
  • Garmin Connect doesn't integrate developer FIT fields using native number mapping for summary, laps, or record fields

Non-Garmin FIT Analysis Sites

ErgIQ takes advantage of the newer defined developer FIT fields. These fields are a new standard that are not currently recognized at all non-Garmin sites. The following sites are known to work but others may work as well, this is not an exhaustive listing:

ErgIQ Reviews or Other Information

  • rowingmusings ErgIQ Review - Review
  • I can't pair my VAHR to PM5 anymore. Using ErgIQ 1.3.2 and the latest 25.... beta for PM5. The latter provides for a separate ANT+ FE-C connection, I'm turning on this one, and then run ErgIQ on the watch. Previously I had to quit the app on the watch once and it paired from the second attempt, not nothing helps. Am I doing anything wrong?

Historically the earlier devices have had some connection issues which aren't related to the ErgIQ application. Have you made any changes with firmware on the watch, etc. I don't have this device so I can see what I can find out but I haven't heard a lot of issues being reported.
  • Yes, sure, I'm on the latest 4.30 FW version now. Will see if anything changes with an update. Thanks
  • Hello Icj2

Thank you for programming this app. As it is a beta Version I will just give you a short feedback.

I tested the app on my vivoactive 3 with FW 2.90 with a public rowing machine in the gym. I have never before paired my watch with any kind of device.
Sorry I didn't read all the 17 pages here, so this might be reported before already.

    - On my vivoactive 3 I set the HR-Sensor (of the watch) on "Broadcast in Activity", usually that is on off on my watch. I don't know if that is necessary at all?
    - Pairing with the PM5 went realy well. The vivoactive asked my if I wanted to Pair with "1234" (showing the last for numbers of the PM5 - I did not even have to type the rehearsed numbers!
    - I didn't see on the PM5 (but didn't bother looking for it) while rowing
    - On the vivoactive 3 I saw all the data including HR while rowing
    - I first did not find out how to stop the activity - consulting your manual I found out you have to press the "menu" button on the PM5 and the watch will stop and save on its own - worked!

Looking at the workout on Garmin Connect:
    - The app turned on the GPS, which I usually have turned off and should not be on in indoor workouts. On the map I can see the gym quite accurate! I read, that others have the difficulty, that they get GPS readings when indoor rowing with the vivoactive 3 - there is thread about this in this forum (vivoavtive 3 section). I never had this happen with the garmin app for indoor rowing, but is probably a bug in the FW of the vivoactive 3.
    - I get Distance of 0 (for GPS readings? ) and a proper "Distance IQ" from the PM5
    - I get graphs for Speed IQ, Power IQ, Harte Rate IQ, Stroke Rate IQ which all look accurate! The top graphs without "IQ" differ from the "with IQ": Stroke Rate without "IQ" is double the Rate with "IQ". Harte Rate with "IQ" is smoother with less spikes than without "IQ" - clearly some mathematical smoothing going on here - but I could not see any difference bigger than 1bpm in my graphs.
  • I don't personally use that configuration but others have reported success. I believe someone posted in the thread with the steps they used which work.

I use the "full" ANT+/BLE/ ANT+FE configuration. here the association sequence steps by steps :
    HRM Run on PM5 via ANT+ then ERG IQ on ANT+ FE to my FR 935 (+ EDGE 520 sometimes as backup) then Painsled iOS (or Ergdata) App via BLE on my Iphone;

However I got PM5 "22291-37" display errors all the time.
this error is said to be caused by bluetooth/ANT data overload on the PM5 (http://www.concept2.com/service/moni...-396-and-22291).

removing HRM Run via ANT+ does not change anything : only if I remove either BLE or ANT+FE connection I got no more PM5 display errors.

But despite i got PM5 displays error all data are properly recorded (on Painsled, PM5 and Erg Iq).
This appeared since latest PM5 FW V25 (and beta V25.001 does not solve the matter).
I read that this might not appeared with new PM5 HW (from Dec 2016), mine is from Dec 2015.

[March 23rd] : Problem of conflict on PM5 between IOs App on BLE and ERG IQ on ANT+ FE seems to be solved with the beta PM5 FW V25.006. I Now have 3 rowing sessions with the "full" configuration on PM5 and faced no issue
  • Just did my second indoor warming up with the app:

    - This time I didn't turn on "Broadcast in Activity" on my watch. The pairing with the PM5 seemed to work the same as last time, no problem
    But:
    - I didn't get an GPS-Recordings anymore on Garmin Connect ! - good, that's the way it should be
    - I did my usual 5 Min warmup-rowing, 1'200 m, 160-190 W but my HR only went slowly up from 61 bpm to 82 bpm. So I'm suddenly quite fit ;) or something is not right here. I didn't check my watch while rowing, but that would be the first time the optical sensor would be so far off.
  • I also have a VivoActive 3 and noticed similar issues with the heart rate readings. I tried using the heart rate sensor on the watch only as well as a Garmin chest strap paired with the PM5 (not the watch). In both cases, the heart rates recorded were inaccurate (<96) for the duration of the workout. Also I noticed that IQ data fields appeared in the Android app the first time it synced with the watch but were wiped out on subsequent syncs.

OHR should not be expected to work properly for rowing due to lots of wrist strain, muscles and tendons movement, etc., as I understand. In my case my VAHR is all over the place, usually very low. I borrowed my wife's VA3 just to try it once, and it did lock up but within 15 min into the workout, and then followed the intervals relatively well, being only about 5-10 bpms lower. I also never had any success with Scosche Rhythm+ at rowing, so I'm using a chest strap.

There are many threads on this both here and in Concept2 forum.

    I have a 735XT (9.10.0.0 software) and am paired with a Concept 2 with PM5 firmware version 25.

    On connect mobile it shows:
    Indoor Rowing

    Timing 25:09
    Calories 33
    Total Strokes 185
    Avg Stroke Rate 54 strokes/min
    Max Stroke Rate 77 stroke/min

    Connect.garmin.com shows:
    0 m distance
    25:09 time
    33 C Calories

ConnectIQ(tm) Stats all appear correct as per shown on the PM5.

Is there a reason that the core stats are not updated correctly (Calories, strokes, distance)? Is this an ErgIQ issue or a ConnectIQ issue? Either way is there anything that I could do to help resolve these issues?

    Thanks.
  • hey i'm on a fenix 5 7.60.0.0 and I have the same issue like MrStats .

Connect IQ has all the right data (even the HRM - TRI strap data which I connected with the PM5)
    but connect.garmin.com shows rubbish.
    0m distance
    30:15 min time is correct
    0 pace
230 C calories (connect IQ says: 254 kCal Calories)
    total strokes: 137

i guess its garmins fault :(

but all in all this is an awesome app! great work!

All of the issues you have listed are issues with Garmin Connect and not a deficiency of the application. Glad you're enjoying!
