Erg IQ

Installation & Configuration

ErgIQ can be installed from the Connect IQ store using the link below. Once installed, a limited set of application settings are available for the user to adjust. These settings as well as the pairing procedure are outlined in the user manual.

Requirements

ErgIQ will connect to a compatible fitness equipment system, the following is currently supported:

  • Concept2 Rower/SkiErg with PM5 (Firmware v22.015/156/722 or greater)

Known Issues

This is a BETA and therefore it has some items being worked through. For issues relating to FIT recording, pairing or Garmin Connect, even if they are listed here please report that you have the issue as well. This will help accurately determine the scale of the problem.

  • workout metrics are incorrect: distance, calories, stroke count (upgrade PM5 to BETA v22.014 or greater using C2 Utility if your comfortable doing this, otherwise it will be fixed in the next release)
  • Fenix3, FR920XT, and vivoactive HR have issues pairing (see post #4 for temporary workarounds until resolved)
  • vivoactive doesn't save last lap and session data correctly (issue being investigated)
  • Garmin Connect doesn't integrate developer FIT fields using native number mapping for summary, laps, or record fields

Non-Garmin FIT Analysis Sites

ErgIQ takes advantage of the newer defined developer FIT fields. These fields are a new standard that are not currently recognized at all non-Garmin sites. The following sites are known to work but others may work as well, this is not an exhaustive listing:

ErgIQ Reviews or Other Information

  • Hmm, I just realized that I don't have any Connect IQ stats in my workout in the Garmin Connect website. Is that the problem that was mentioned in the first post? But looking at earlier posts at other people workouts and it seems it's missing from others' workouts as well. Maybe it would be helpful to include in the manual what information I'm supposed to see in the GC website.

Anyway, I was using the release firmware V25 for PM5. I installed the beta V25.001 today. (This beta version has seprate connection options for ANT+FE and ANT+FE-C.) ErgIQ still crashes if I end the workout without any strokes. Will try an actual workout later today and see what else has changed.

    Edit: workout here: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2364551650
Please don't laugh. I'm really slow and weak.

After it crashes, please message me the contents of /GARMIN/GARMIN/APPS/LOGS/CIQ_LOG.TXT.
  • So finally got fed up with my vivoactive and picked up a Forerunner 935.

Erg IQ seems to work, however when the rower saves the activity I get a "Failed" message on the Garmin. However when I sync the activity appears to be there.
  • Thank you for providing an application that talks with PM5 and Garmin. I installed your app to my Garmin 735xt. I then went to the rowing machine and the rower and the watch and HR monitor sync'ed no problem. I rowed for around 3 min and stopped the activity and then sync'ed my watch with Garmin. I for some reason see distance as zero. Should I see a distance on the Garmin connect display? I would like to if that is possible. It is also zero on Strava.

I see an IQ distance of 566 m. Does that mean I rowed 566 meters? Seems really high for only rowing for 3 min.
    Screen grabs uploaded.
  • With my Fenix 3 and PM5 I too am getting the same issue as Paula above. All the stats are listed in the "Connect IQ" area but noting in the distance or calories entry. I can place those amnually however. Thank you for developing this app!

Currently Connect IQ apps aren't allowed to populate those fields so there is nothing that can be done to fix it. This is a know issue for all Connect IQ applications and not just ErgIQ.

You would have to check what the rowing monitor told you for comparison but 3 minutes for 566 m is not impossible. That indicates that you were rowing at a 2:39/500m which is more than achievable. You can check out the C2 calculator here: http://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/training/calculators/pace-calculator. See my comment above about why the distance and other fields at the top don't populate like you expect but it is a limitation of the Connect website. As for Strava, I've reached out to them and they are not interested in supporting the developer fields for rowing at this time unless things have changed. Both Training Peaks and SportTracks do fully support the developer fields and populate as expected.

Seems like I only get the "Failed" message on the latest C2 beta firmware -- no such message on the latest release firmware.

I do notice that ErgIQ seems to turn the FR935 backlight on when starting the activity...and it doesn't seem to go off? Or maybe I didn't wait long enough...
  • Hi all! Thank you for this great app!

I’m just getting started using it with my C2 PM5 and Garmin FR735XT.

My notes after a few uses, is that I really would like the ErgIQ app to be able to write distance and other data to the standard fields, not just the ErgIQ related fields.
I also noticed that for some of my workouts, all these extra fields from ergIQ are listed in Garmin Connect website, but not always in the Connect mobile app.

Otherwise, I had some troubles connecting/pairing to begin with, until I think I figured out the right way. I see in the forum that there is a few struggling with connecting several devices simultaniously.

Here is my procedure to connect my 735XT, iphone 6s with ErgData and Garmin HRM3 heart rate monitor:
    1. Make sure all devices are switched on:
    - ErgIQ started on 735
    - Bluetooth on iphone (do not open the ErgData-app yet, as this will cause extra back and forth to complete this setup)
    - PM5 on
    2. Go to More options -> Connect with ANT+. Select HRM when it pops up in the list. HRM connected and ready.
    3. Go to More options -> Turn Wireless ON -> Connect with ANT+FE. Now 735XT will ask to pair with PM5 (showing 4-digit number on screen). Pair and 735XT is connected and ready.
    4. Go on iphone, open ErgData. This will automatically connect ErgData and message «Connection successful» appears. Phone connected and ready.

Now all devices are connected and ready!

I have also tried connection with LiveRowing instead of ErgData, and this seems to be working also, but I have not done any workouts using this app yet.
  • Things have been busy lately but I'm working through the forum backlog here:

    - Crash On Activity When No Rowing Has Occurred : This has been tracked down I believe and fixed. After the other items being worked on are resolved this will get released. Some have reported this as IQ! error when no strokes rowed for reference. The fix version will be 1.3.0.

    - Connect Integration : This is commonly reported but not something I have control over. I would suggest continuing to indicate here in the forums you would like to see the fields in Connect populated. Not sure things would change but this might help Garmin understand there is a user base who desires this. Until then the data will be in the Connect IQ section and will work in Training Peaks and SportTracks as expected.

    - Connect Mobile Issues : I noticed some of the items in Garmin Connect Mobile are now showing correctly. This is the same as the issue above, the majority of these have been reported and are out of the developers control.

    - Edge 1030 Support : This will be in release 1.3.0 once completed.

    - Failed Activity Upload : I have seen this issue on and off but don't have a good explanation since it seems to trigger right after a workout but then does successfully get uploaded into Connect. I'll continue to keep an eye out for it but without an error log and no real error occurring it is hard to identify if it really is an issue or not.

    - Misc. Pairing Issues : I believe the majority of these error are either firmware on the PM5 or Garmin device need to be updated. Please double check the manual at the beginning of the thread and version numbers. If you continue to see issues, use the contact developer on the app store page and I'll see what I can figure out.

This is the list of outstanding issues and requests I believe, if I missed something feel free to post again since I don't want backtrack through every post. I'm glad to see so many people are enjoying the application and find it valuable, Enjoy!

I have not seen this issue with the backlight before. Can you outline what system settings you're using for the backlight? That might help me see if I can track down what is happening.
