Erg IQ

Installation & Configuration

ErgIQ can be installed from the Connect IQ store using the link below. Once installed, a limited set of application settings are available for the user to adjust. These settings as well as the pairing procedure are outlined in the user manual.

Requirements

ErgIQ will connect to a compatible fitness equipment system, the following is currently supported:

  • Concept2 Rower/SkiErg with PM5 (Firmware v22.015/156/722 or greater)

Known Issues

This is a BETA and therefore it has some items being worked through. For issues relating to FIT recording, pairing or Garmin Connect, even if they are listed here please report that you have the issue as well. This will help accurately determine the scale of the problem.

  • workout metrics are incorrect: distance, calories, stroke count (upgrade PM5 to BETA v22.014 or greater using C2 Utility if your comfortable doing this, otherwise it will be fixed in the next release)
  • Fenix3, FR920XT, and vivoactive HR have issues pairing (see post #4 for temporary workarounds until resolved)
  • vivoactive doesn't save last lap and session data correctly (issue being investigated)
  • Garmin Connect doesn't integrate developer FIT fields using native number mapping for summary, laps, or record fields

Non-Garmin FIT Analysis Sites

ErgIQ takes advantage of the newer defined developer FIT fields. These fields are a new standard that are not currently recognized at all non-Garmin sites. The following sites are known to work but others may work as well, this is not an exhaustive listing:

ErgIQ Reviews or Other Information

  • rowingmusings ErgIQ Review - Review
  • How come RowPro and ErgIQ do not work together properly? Would be nice to have the best of both worlds... I keep getting the IQ-Screen Error on my F5 every time a session on RowPro actally starts.
    Thanks!

I know some people are doing this but some things are a function of RowPro not programming the monitor correctly for interval workouts, etc. That said, there shouldn't be any IQ! screens being encountered. If you're sure the most recent version of ErgIQ is installed on your device, please check what is in the /GARMIN/GARMIN/APPS/LOGS/CIQ_LOG.TXT and send that for review.

The latest version of ROWpro 5.1 is getting better but still not valid for interval workout. If you want to avoid IQ! Message after a continuous Rowpro exercise always press the Menu button of the PM5 for pause/stop but no click on the Rowpro green button (despite it looks attractive!!). Unfortunately interval workout from rowpro will give a IQ! at the first pause/change period. I will continue to explore anyway!
[Nov 16] Just tried an interval workout with rowpro 5.1 : No IQ! message anymore -good- however the session is sliced in multiple sessions not just one (the same behavior on PM5 and ERG IQ) so my guess is Rowpro does not send a proper "Pause" message to PM5 or PM5 always see it as a "Stop" message.
  • I cannot get Erg IQ to connect reliably with my vivoactive. I have the latest beta firmware, but have had this issue for the past few C2 firmwares. I end up spending 2-3 minutes futzing around back and forth between the monitor and the watch re-trying getting it to pair. The past few times I've tried I couldn't get it to work at all.

It wouldn't surprise me if this was Garmin's fault -- it seems like Garmin has no interest in fixing bugs for their older products.

    Any ideas?

With VAHR it pairs with PM5 if you enter the Erg IQ App once, then exit, then enter the App again... I don't know why, it is just the workaround I found!
  • Hi, thanks for making this app. I've been keeping an eye on it for a long time but did't have any Connect IQ device. Today I discovered that I actually have a broken and discarded Vivoactive. It was still on firmware 3.20 (mid-2015) and I upgraded it to the final 4.40 firmware. The Vivoactive's USB dock didn't work properly and it took me about a million retries before it worked. Anyway, my setup is:

    Vivoactive firmware 4.40 + ErgIQ 1.2.2
    PM5 firmware 25 (Model D)
Sony phone with Android 8.0 + ErgData 1.55
    HRM-Run 4 connected to PM5 using ANT+
Sandisk USB stick plugged into PM5

Everything connected together and worked perfectly. No issues with searching or connection, and I don't seem to have the "doesn't save last lap and session data correctly" issue as listed on the first post. The only mini-problem I found and I think someone wrote about earlier is that if I start a workout then end it immediately without any strokes ErgIQ crashes.

If teissonj suggests this works I would expect it to and since I don't have easy access to those devices it's hard to track down. I believe that most of the connection related issues on all the newer devices have been resolved. There were some nuances with the early devices and I don't know the exact status of all the bug reports put in.

Can you confirm that you are using the latest BETA firmware on the PM5? There are fixes I believe for this, if your running the latest BETA let me know and we'll track down what is happening.

Hmm, I just realized that I don't have any Connect IQ stats in my workout in the Garmin Connect website. Is that the problem that was mentioned in the first post? But looking at earlier posts at other people workouts and it seems it's missing from others' workouts as well. Maybe it would be helpful to include in the manual what information I'm supposed to see in the GC website.

Anyway, I was using the release firmware V25 for PM5. I installed the beta V25.001 today. (This beta version has seprate connection options for ANT+FE and ANT+FE-C.) ErgIQ still crashes if I end the workout without any strokes. Will try an actual workout later today and see what else has changed.

Please don't laugh. I'm really slow and weak.
  • Hi, Firstly huge thanks for the app and the effort put in- I really appreciate it and it is filling a huge gap left by Garmin. Garmin please take note! A long shot question here which may be technically impossible, but would be great to understand the answer. I have a Fenix 5x running latest software, which I use with a Garmin Run heart belt. I can connect this to my PM5 (running firmware 159) and use ErgIQ just fine. The tricky bit is I would like to use LiveRowing to fire up and track my workouts via an iPad. LiveRowing connects to the PM5 via Bluetooth. Dream ticket for me is using the LiveRowing app on an iPad to set up a workout, then also track it via the Garmin set up. So far, I have been able to row a piece in ergiq set up from the PM5, with the HR belt connected to the Fenix5x. This works fine. I then successfully connect the LiveRowing app via Bluetooth iPad to the PM5- everything looks fine. Then load up a workout- all good to go- then start rowing. At this point, the watch displays the IQ! Screen. Is this software related, and is there anyway it can be fixed, or am I using too many channels between the various devices for this to be feasible? Thanks again... Tom
