Erg IQ

Installation & Configuration

ErgIQ can be installed from the Connect IQ store using the link below. Once installed, a limited set of application settings are available for the user to adjust. These settings as well as the pairing procedure are outlined in the user manual.

Requirements

ErgIQ will connect to a compatible fitness equipment system, the following is currently supported:

  • Concept2 Rower/SkiErg with PM5 (Firmware v22.015/156/722 or greater)

Known Issues

This is a BETA and therefore it has some items being worked through. For issues relating to FIT recording, pairing or Garmin Connect, even if they are listed here please report that you have the issue as well. This will help accurately determine the scale of the problem.

  • workout metrics are incorrect: distance, calories, stroke count (upgrade PM5 to BETA v22.014 or greater using C2 Utility if your comfortable doing this, otherwise it will be fixed in the next release)
  • Fenix3, FR920XT, and vivoactive HR have issues pairing (see post #4 for temporary workarounds until resolved)
  • vivoactive doesn't save last lap and session data correctly (issue being investigated)
  • Garmin Connect doesn't integrate developer FIT fields using native number mapping for summary, laps, or record fields

Non-Garmin FIT Analysis Sites

ErgIQ takes advantage of the newer defined developer FIT fields. These fields are a new standard that are not currently recognized at all non-Garmin sites. The following sites are known to work but others may work as well, this is not an exhaustive listing:

ErgIQ Reviews or Other Information

  • Only way I could pair is if the Heart Rate Source was PM and no Pairing ID in the settings.
If changed the pairing ID from 0 to my number I could not pair anymore. The number was correct I checked it multiple times.

I double checked today and the pairing ID feature is working for me. I'll need to check into it and see what I can find since I've not received other reports that it isn't working.
  • this is basically what I found works with LiveRowing too. Only for some reason once I connect the 735XT I have to hit menu and go back out to the PM5 home page before going back to wireless and then connecting LiveRowing with Bluetooth. Totally awesome now.

    I use Fenix3 and ErgData
First I connect hr to pm5
Then I connect Fenix3 and after I Oper ErgData on my tablet and connect to pm5.
    Everything works good
  • I used the 1.12 today. I had problem with intervals. I made 2 sessions of one leg 4*1000 with 15" rest (time for change leg) first time after the first interval the iq! Logo appeared second time the same after 2 intervals. Same problem trying with regrow and immediately exit the workout. Both with edge 520 and fenix3
It saved the workout until iq logo appeared ( so 1/4 first time and 2/4 second time)

How are the intervals programmed, on the PM5 or in RowPro, etc? You've been using this for a while, when you upgraded did you re-save your settings or reinstall to deal with a ErgID you might have saved due to the settings update to support multiple ergs?

I use only pm5 for intervals
I upgraded the app and then resaved the settings. Should I do something particular?
Yesterday I made an half marathon with edge520 and no iq logo appeared (just the shut down like on Fenix3 if I don't turn off the PM5)

This evening I deleted the app from Fenix3 and I reinstalled it. I will se tomorrow...

Ps: the edge520 saved the activity as fitness equipment and not like indoor roeing
  • Where do calorie numbers come from?

After seeing lcj2's nice Sporttracks sample I decided to try importing to it as well. I used a quick 12:30min Skierg session where I programmed a 300m/250m/200m/250m/300m session with :30R (although in reality I had some distractions and rested longer).

In Garmin Connect it correctly shows up as being about 68 calories. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1517999998

In sporttracks i shows up as 1298 calories. https://sporttracks.mobi/activity/13495782

I believe some similar very bizzare high calorie number showed up on the watch face in ErgIQ for a second as well but I'm not sure entirely.

Also, I'd prefer to just use the wrist HR on my 735xt. It correctly shows up in the details but I can't get the average heart rate across the whole session to show up.

Lastly, what's the trick for getting it to show pace in /500m instead of /1KM?

Overall seems like a really nice improvement from Garmin Connect though

The calorie issue is a known problem for FWv22 on the PM5, are you running v22 or v22.014? The BETA corrects the issue on intervals with calories being incremented incorrectly. If you're not comfortable putting the BETA FW on the PM5, it will be included in the next production release. The pace being off in SportTracks must be a bug in not identifying that it is indoor skiing and I'll report that if they want to correct it but is related to the display site and not the data.

EDIT: I will add that once corrected the numbers will be closer but not the same, the calorie number I report is from the PM5 and not based on Garmin's algorithms but the error you're seeing is from the non-updated FW I would guess.
  • Is there any way (with Connect) to show Pace (time / 500m) in addition to / instead of speed (m/s)?

Also, it might be nice if it were possible to discard stroke rate values that are zero as it makes the default scaling of plots in Connect fairly useless for actually seeing what's going on with Stroke Rate. Or maybe the Concept2 simply shouldn't report a stroke rate of zero (assuming it is). Dunno; I guess I could see it either way -- maybe the right answer is to use a 3rd party tool to analyze the .fit files, but that's not something I've ever done (certainly most users would probably not do that).

I had to re-install after upgrading to 1.0.0-BETA-12 due to the settings change. If that doesn't work let me know and we'll track it down. There isn't a great way to have release notes but I did make mention of it on the application page.

Currently the speed is what is defined to be saved in the FIT file and is what is expected by sites consuming the data. In this case Connect needs to be updated to either allow this field to use the native number map to replace the native Garmin data or allow the developer a scaling display option, neither exist at this point.

The charting your discussing is something I have noted myself. The values really should be 0 and should stay that way as it is a correct reflection of the workout. The correct solution in my eyes is to plot and define the axis with extreme outside values not being included in the scale on display. This will preserve the data for analysis and calculations but remove them from the view and provide a better zoom. SportTracks does a good job of this. Training Peaks and Garmin's plots I have found harder to work with.
