Erg IQ

Installation & Configuration

ErgIQ can be installed from the Connect IQ store using the link below. Once installed, a limited set of application settings are available for the user to adjust. These settings as well as the pairing procedure are outlined in the user manual.

Requirements

ErgIQ will connect to a compatible fitness equipment system, the following is currently supported:

  • Concept2 Rower/SkiErg with PM5 (Firmware v22.015/156/722 or greater)

Known Issues

This is a BETA and therefore it has some items being worked through. For issues relating to FIT recording, pairing or Garmin Connect, even if they are listed here please report that you have the issue as well. This will help accurately determine the scale of the problem.

  • workout metrics are incorrect: distance, calories, stroke count (upgrade PM5 to BETA v22.014 or greater using C2 Utility if your comfortable doing this, otherwise it will be fixed in the next release)
  • Fenix3, FR920XT, and vivoactive HR have issues pairing (see post #4 for temporary workarounds until resolved)
  • vivoactive doesn't save last lap and session data correctly (issue being investigated)
  • Garmin Connect doesn't integrate developer FIT fields using native number mapping for summary, laps, or record fields

Non-Garmin FIT Analysis Sites

ErgIQ takes advantage of the newer defined developer FIT fields. These fields are a new standard that are not currently recognized at all non-Garmin sites. The following sites are known to work but others may work as well, this is not an exhaustive listing:

ErgIQ Reviews or Other Information

  • @TEISSONJ -- I read your post after submitting mine about the Edge 520. I'm encouraged by your success, but I can't seem to get it to work. My Garmin sees the PM5 as a sensor, but that's it. Any tricks that you discovered to get the app to work? Thanks.

    Hi Bob
First - but you might already have done it- register the PM5 number (4 digits) in the erg IQ App settings (either through Garmin Connect Mobile or through Garmin express)
then if you already registered the PM5 (same 4 digits) as a home trainer sensor (Ant FE-C) in the sensors list of the Edge 520 you shall disactivate it. There is a conflict while the pairing phase with the Erg IQ App when the PM5 "home trainer " sensor is activated. I have no further trick to share. PM me if this does not work.

Note that from what I saw Erg IQ do no take "control" of the PM5 (the C of FE-C) just using the Fitness Equipment FE part of the protocol: by opposition to Rowpro software (control via PC/USB) that I use a lot or Liverowing App (but I am not familiar with the last).
The only "control" of the PM5 through FE-C that I saw is the viiiiva HRM with 4iiii App; but the 4iiii App Has no capability to start stop the PM5 or to send a goal or define standard/customized wotkout etc ...
    HiH
  • Garmin Edge 520

Thanks lcj2 and TEISSONJ - disabling the PM5 sensor on the Garmin did the trick. Thanks again for your help!
  • Do anyone know if C2 has plans to update the PM4 firmware to be compatible with ANT FE-C (and this app)?
  • Fenix 5 with ANT FE-C

Fenix 5 with ANT FE-C? so better compatibility for pairing between C2 PM5 and Erg IQ App? (see my previous post on Fenix 3)

My hopes vanish a little bit ... the answer seems no :(

At this time the PM5 v22 or greater is supported. I don't know about any future plans with the PM4 so can't speak to that.

The pairing issue isn't a ANT+FE-C issue since that is just a protocol specification outlining how the communication works. Once someone gets a chance to try the device we'll get a better idea of the pairing situation but the device itself doesn't need to support ANT+FE-C since the application does that, it just need to be able to pair. It's early with the announcement happening today so we'll see.
  • Garmin Edge 520 not recording distance in .fit file

    @TEISSONJ & @lcj2,

Thanks again for your earlier help. I did my first rowing session with the Edge 520 and it seemed to work well, with one exception. The display on the 520 showed the total distance rowed at the end of the session, but the .fit file the Erg IQ app created did not have distance in it, so it showed up as 0 feet in Garmin Connect. I can manually add the distance to the Connect record, but I'd like to also send the .fit file to Strava and have the distance recorded there, along with the other data that was recorded by the Erg IQ app. Any thoughts on this?

    /Bob

So the integration with Connect is probably what you are seeing here. It is on the list of improvements to make but sadly it is out of my control if it gets done. In the mean time, in the chart area you should see charts labeled "Connect IQ" showing the metrics from your workout as well as a section at the bottom of the page labeled "Connect IQ" in the session section. You should see the distance and other information relevant to the workout there. Again, the speed is correct but there is no way for me to format it as pace/500m which is what people expect. With Strava, the file should move over successfully but they don't recognize the speed or distance elements at this point, that is a Strava issue and I would suggest you tell them that you would like that feature. Currently Training Peaks and SportTracks are the only two sites that fully take advantage of the data being recorded.
  • When I used it the distance measured ended up not being recorded.

Some features that might be useful would be the ability to have multiple pairing codes stored so you can pair with a ski-erg or the rower.

You can now supply multiple Erg IDs in the user settings in a comma delimited list. Please note that this will select any ID so if both devices are close by and in a idle broadcasting state, it will choose the first in the list. This is available in 1.0.0-BETA-12 that went out last night.
  • I have waited to pair my fenix3 with concept 2 for so long. Older garmin watches had this abilty. Sadly I have not tried those, to compare.
    Tested the app.
    Fenix 3 , PM5 FW 22
    Connection was easy.
I did two 15 minute workouts one "just row" and one "custom 15 min". Everything seems correct. Watch records strange strokes. The other workout I had watch on the table.

Sad that my watch can only show time and no distance and no heart rate. I hope this can be resolved sometime in the future. But this is really a minor thing.
Also it seems that Recovery advisor does not recognize this activity. But this is not important.
I use Sportlyzer (https://beta.sportlyzer.com) app for my other activities, and it does not sync those rowing workouts. I was hoping that it gets heart rate and distance info. Need to check with them probably.
When I look at the activity at Connect web app I can overlay heart rate, speed and stroke rate. And that is what I need.

When I look at the workout on my watch, it has an option " Download Heart Rate". What does it do

If I have watch paired with HRM strap, could watch store heart rate as ordinary apps also?
