Now .. Your Heart and the Vivoactive HR device teams up to 'Measure your Sleep'

Get HR Sleep in the Garmin Connect IQ Store here ..

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/b...2-c9fe3f777fc0

Now measure your Sleep Performance with HR Sleep .. see how your sleep improves over time using your HR data.

Be sure that your battery is charged to at least 30% before running HR Sleep overnight. That green light .. is a little hungry.

Sleep Zones Example ..

Set Minimum Sleep HR - 40

Sleep Zone 0 .. less than 40 bpm
Sleep Zone 1 .. 40 - 43 bpm
Sleep Zone 2 .. 44 - 47 bpm
Sleep Zone 3 .. 48 - 51 bpm
Sleep Zone 4 .. 52 - 55 bpm
Sleep Zone 5 .. over 55 bpm

Thank you ..

  • Updated the app and will test again tonight. I will set min HR to 50 again, same as yesterday.

Btw, I just had a look at GC and my sleep data was changed compared to what it was this morning. Garmin decided to make my sleep start 3 hours earlier! So according to Garmin I slept 10 hours and 27 minutes! Garmin does not even seem to detect when you press buttons on the watch, since I started Sleep HR around 0:00h, GC shows my sleep started at 20:53 now.
  • I've sent you a PM message with last night's test results. Btw, I did not read your latest message in this thread before that, so I did not know about the algorithm you are using now. Looks promising, but I also made a suggestion that maybe even could improve things further.
  • Interesting results. Your awake time seems quite ok, but you have set your min HR higher than your real min HR. If you adjust your min HR to a lower value, your awake time will increase again. In my case I did not reach my min HR setting last night, which meant less deep sleep, more light sleep and more awake time. But.. a higher min (and average) HR during a night, does not necessarily mean you are awake more. But I think it will impact deep sleep (will be less) and light sleep (will be more).
  • Nice addition, can't wait to try it out!:)

I used the app again last night but pressed the back button on my watch before looking at the results. Must have been half asleep still. So, I am afraid I have no testing results for you today. Btw, was there a new version released yesterday as well, since GC showed there was an update? I assume that was the version with the separate value for deep/light/awake, but not the user setting yet?

HR Sleep Version 1.169 is now released.

Note to eliminate confusion re Garmin Sleep Data and HR Sleep, it now has restorative and non restoring sleep data.

This is more conducive to the data given by HR Sleep.

It has a user setting to allow the variability of the starting 'Restore Number'.
I recommend it to be set the same as your minimum HR value as a starting point.

The default is 45 .. same as the minimum HR value.

You should set it so that your awake data is similar to what Garmin shows in Garmin Connect for your sleep.

This new data will allow you to see an increase / decrease in the appropriate sleep data areas to see how your day to day sleep patterns evolve over time.

The reason for this .. is Garmin uses movement to measure sleep, and HR Sleep uses heart rate data, thus making a direct comparison between the two almost impossible.

I also cleaned up this thread to remove conflicting data .. that was in regards to previous versions of HR Sleep.

  • Tested the new version last night. I slept very badly last night. Was awake very often, but only for short periods. Looking at the data HR Sleep captured I noticed a low min HR of 44, which is much lower than normal for me (normally around 50). And the average was higher than normal, with a value of 63 (normally between 55-60).

I put both user HR settings on 50 and the results were as follows:
    - Deep: 9 min 35 sec
    - Light: 6 hours 41 min 47 sec
    - Awake: 12 min 36 sec
Since I slept very badly last night, I think the light sleep time, which is very high, could be correct. Not sure about the measured min HR though...

    Garmin Connect sleep data:
    - Deep : 2 hours 34 min
    - Light: 6 hours 3 min
    - Awake: 10 min

So awake times are almost the same, but deep sleep is quite different. Light sleep is not that different, but GC is reporting 1.5 hours too much total sleep (which is my biggest issue with Garmin's sleep tracking). So light sleep on GC should be around 4.5 hours.

The minimum and average are not related to the screen in question at all, totally different calculations. My min last night was pretty low and the avg was pretty normal. But I had a lot of green squares .. indicating a very low HR for the night.

I have my restore number set to 45, and had lots of restorative.

Btw the new version is as follows:

Restorative .. restore number up to and including +5 (the bottom 25% of the total restorative and non restorative times).
    Non Restorative .. restore number +6 to + 20
Awake .. restore number over +20

HR Sleep Version Released - Added additional Data Log information

    [Version 1.172] May 24 / 2017

    - Added additional data to logging at start and ending of application use.

The duration is the elapsed time .. the actual time that the time counter is running and your HR is being recorded.

Be sure to check your LOG FILE name .. as it has likely changed after the upgrade.

I have also noticed that Garmin has another lovely bug (at least on Garmin Connect iOS version) .. where the settings file is zapped when a new version is released. As a result .. you have to update your user settings.

    [Version 1.173] May 25 / 2017

    - Bug fix release and code improvements.
    - Improved data logging in regards to start and ending times. It is now based on app starting and HR capture and app ending (and not when it is first initialized).

    Note .. I only guarantee the times +/- a second. :)

Be sure to check your log file name as the application name has likely changed. Also .. user settings may need to be set again.
