Now .. Your Heart and the Vivoactive HR device teams up to 'Measure your Sleep'

Get HR Sleep in the Garmin Connect IQ Store here ..

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/b...2-c9fe3f777fc0

Now measure your Sleep Performance with HR Sleep .. see how your sleep improves over time using your HR data.

Be sure that your battery is charged to at least 30% before running HR Sleep overnight. That green light .. is a little hungry.

Sleep Zones Example ..

Set Minimum Sleep HR - 40

Sleep Zone 0 .. less than 40 bpm
Sleep Zone 1 .. 40 - 43 bpm
Sleep Zone 2 .. 44 - 47 bpm
Sleep Zone 3 .. 48 - 51 bpm
Sleep Zone 4 .. 52 - 55 bpm
Sleep Zone 5 .. over 55 bpm

Thank you ..

  • Makes sense, could there still be some behind the scenes Z0/Z1, etc...logging based on a "sleep HR" that could be entered in the settings ?

I just don't see it happening.
  • Hi VivoactiveHRGuy,

You suggested I post my questions about sleep research on this thread.

I downloaded your app and the premise of it seems to be that the lower the heart rate, the better the sleep. However, I've failed finding data on sleep and heart rate. I haven't even been able to find heart rate norms for each sleep cycle. Can you point me to studies that have determined norms or averages for each sleep cycle an/or studies that show a correlation with heart rate and sleep quality?

    Thanks!

You can use the data from HR Sleep any way you like. I supply the information only as best I can given the limitations of the product.

As a result, I make no medical or other claims .. and have (I believe) removed references to better sleep. I do not want to imply anything or mislead anyone.

However .. Garmin describing sleep as deep and light is in my mind pretty useless as it is non quantified. At least HR Sleep will give you real HR values but it is up to you as to how you use the data.

For myself, having at times severe insomnia issues .. a lower HR average in particular is an indicator of better sleep. I have tracked my sleep over a year and have noticed distinct differences.

The only real way to tell if you truly had better sleep .. doing a sleep study and wiring up your brain etc, obviously not an option here.

That's too bad but I understand, maybe later ? Actually I was surprised to find "HR Sleep" for the Forerunner after some of your previous posts ;-)

Could you maybe add the start and end time in the log, I think that's shown on the VAHR (don't have it handy right now).

As a side note "HR Sleep" seems to use very little battery life on the FR235 vs the VAHR, will try to get exact numbers tonight/tomorrow.

HR Sleep for the Forerunner was an accident .. it will never happen again. :p

But .. the 2 applications are not at all similar. The Forerunner version is pretty much the equivalent of the HR Sleep Lite version for the Vivoactive HR. The screen shape was the reason why I did not design the Forerunner version the same, the data just will not fit on the screen.

Re the battery usage .. I am not surprised as the Vivoactive HR version does a lot of processing. The Forerunner version not as much.

Re the log .. the Vivoactive HR version does not give you the start and end times. It will log the elapsed time (time the app was running, while not paused) if you have time set as the summary display type as compared to percentage.

I am willing to add the system time (starting and ending time) to the Forerunner version but not the Vivoactive HR version. This is due to the Vivoactive HR version already having 2 lines of data and adding more would likely involve 3 lines and I need to limit is somewhere.
  • A happy accident then ! ;-)
Yes that would be great for the system start/end time, thanks.

For HR Sleep Forerunner 235 users, there is now a new version. Let me know if there are any issues as I do not have a Forerunner and cannot 100% test as I would like.

    - Changes to the Forerunner version are in the NEW section of the download page.
  • That was quick, thanks !
Gave it a quick try and I can't see any issues so far, the buttons work as described as well as the log.
Will log overnight and report back tomorrow.

I just made a new version .. a bit more robust. So .. you should update before tonight. I am gone for the day, please let me know if you have any issues via the Contact Developer link on the download page, as I will get that quicker than posting on here.
