App: Hike2

The next generation of the Hike app. With additional memory and sensors on the vivoactive HR, all be looking at adding new stuff. Right now, it makes use of the hardware compass and barometric Altimeter!

Like Hike, it's stats up and once it gets GPS, press start to begin the recording. There are then a number of screens you can swipe through to see data, like time-distance, pace-speed, altitude data, lat/lon data, and a chart that shows your hike so far. Pressing the back button while recording marks a waypoint, and pressing start pauses the recording, and gives you the option to resume, save, or discard the recording.

Please post questions and problems here.
  • Hike2 doesn't support using a trial. GPX nor .fit
  • NOTE: The 2.70 firmware on the vivoactive 3 has a bug where GPS isn't being used/recorded in CIQ apps that use GPS. This has been reported to Garmin, and we just have to wait for a fix. It impacts all CIQ apps that use GPS.

  • Great app! I finished a trek in Bhutan last October using it every day. The only issue I noted was that when resting sitting down at times, the distance traveled would continue to increment over that time. So over a 10 minute rest period, I seemed to have gained as much as .08 miles - while sitting down. I presume this might be an issue with the GPS returning erroneous readings during that time. Perhaps the step counter could be examined during distance tracking just to see that both are advancing? I know that method is not foolproof (I have also used this app to just measure distance while traveling in a boat, for example), but I figure I now have to monitor the distance while resting if I want to get an accurate read on the distance hiked.
  • If you just stop for 10 minutes, what's happening is the location (the lat/lon) can fluctuate a small amount (maybe only a foot difference) every second, but that adds up over 10 minutes. In your case, .08 miles (about 400'). The way to prevent that, is to pause the recording when you take a break. Press the upper right button will pause. Then, when you select resume, it starts recording again.

when you are paused, the back button will take you back to the screens so you can look at them, and the paused state is shown on them. By default, when paused, the watch will also vibrate every 5 minutes, so you don't forget to resume. (that's come in handy for me :) )

So, all you have to do when you take a break is pause the recording, and you won't get the extra distance.
  • I'll try to remember to pause it then. When I paused it for longer breaks, like lunch stops, that reminder vibration came in really handy - a great feature. And I have to point out another outstanding feature, how the wrist flip (gesture action, I believe) action gives you some temporary summary data depending on the screen you are one - I really like that one.

I'm having trouble finding where/how I can suppress certain screens. I don't see the ability to do that in the Connect store site.
  • To turn off screens you use app settings from your phone or garmin express. The first sticky in this sub-forum is a basic "how to" for app settings.
  • I know you can't "upload" a set of predetermined waypoints but is it possible to manually edit the list of waypoints that are used for Hike2? And, using that method, also add waypoints you have not already saved from a previous hike?
  • There's currently not a way to edit the waypoints. They can only be added by being at a location and marking it.
  • Hello, It seems to me an application with great potential. The possibility of recording waypoins is very good, but I do not see the possibility of retracing your steps, that is, I do not see a map of breadcrumbs next to the waypoins. Is it possible to do this?
    A greeting
  • The screen after the list of waypoints shows the breadcrumbs, as well as where the waypoints are on it. The app can save the waypoints for reuse, but not the breadcrumb trail.
