Data Field: STEPS EMTB Data

This is the support thread for the "STEPS EMTB Data" data field, found here on the app store: apps.garmin.com/.../461743f9-b350-486f-bd87-613c7b0bab90

It's a simple data field that connects via Bluetooth LE to your Shimano STEPS e-bike and displays useful information like battery percentage and assist mode.

How on earth do I get the steps sc e7000 display on my emtb to connect to the edge 530 I just purchased?

Hi It's been a while since I connected fresh to a new EMTB, but I think this is the kind of process you will need:

Note you don't need to use this STEP EMTB data field - there should already be some data fields built into your Edge 530.

Pair your Edge 530 to the EMTB - probably some option like "add sensor"
Create a new activity on your Edge 530 - e.g. for EMTB riding
Customise the data screens for your new activity - by adding data fields to show things like battery %, cadence, speed, distance. There is probably also a built-in "Shimano STEPS" page (there was on my 1030).

Thanx Mark I have found a page that indicates you must have a Shimano D Fly EW - EN100 wireless unit to allow the units to connect. Your advice is logical but doesn’t seem to allow the connection. I will have a look at the links and see if I have any luck. Will let you know if I have any luck.

The E7000 display should work - the EW-EN100 is just the same, except it has no display! (You can only use one or the other - it just depends whether you want a screen or not.)

Sometimes there seems to be problems getting that connection, but I don't know what it is down to. Possibly a password on the EMTB? I'd ask on EMTB forums as someone there will have experienced the same.

Any possibility to make this compatible for the Epix?

Hiya :) Unfortunately it seems not

This data field uses Bluetooth for the connection, and that was introduced in CIQ 3.1.0 - it looks like the Epix does not support versions of CIQ beyond 1.3. So I can't even try making a build for it, sorry ...

Is there a setup guide for this app? How do I use it? When I turn on my bike and my watch I am getting the "BLE Start" screen. Do I need to sync my watch with my bike? Does it start automatically? I have the latest firmware on my Vivoactive 4s.

Normally it will connect automatically and "just work", but ... there was a bug on the Vivo 4, 4s and Venu (preventing Bluetooth starting up) which Garmin have now fixed, but we're still waiting for that fix to get released to real watches with a firmware update. Currently the fix is only available in beta firmware downloads.

The fix is in firmware 5.63 - so when the next firmware update is released for your watch then it should include this (Beta is at 5.75)

I'll just note here how it works normally:

By default it connects to the strongest Bluetooth signal of any Shimano STEPS motors it detects nearby. (Probably the closest bike).
In the settings it remembers the MAC address of the last bike it connected to.
If you often ride in a group with multiple Shimano e-bikes then in the app settings, you can lock the app to only connect to the last bike it connected to. (I've never actually tried it myself in a group of Shimano e-bikes so I don't know how necessary this is, but it seemed useful!)
