Data Field: Readable Race & Training Pacer

The Readable Race & Training Pacer data field will show the number of seconds you are ahead or behind a specified target pace or race goal. Somewhat like the Garmin RacePro and Virtual Pacer functionality, although much more advanced and versatile.

Maximum readability is achieved by using the largest possible custom font that can fit the data field! So, if you have a hard time reading small numbers, like me at the end of a hard race, and prefer not to run with classes, this is the Pacer App for you!

You may also try the related Advanced R&T Pacer, which offers more screen layout options but offers less readability. See https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/fed825a9-07bb-40fc-b272-17b37af6f6e2.

The Readable R&T Pacer App offers many advanced features for training, running tests, and accurate race pacing:

  • Either a target pace or a race goal, with optional “warm up” segments can be specified. Basic examples are “5:00”, “5@25:00” and “1 -10; 5@25:00”. The later example results in a race goal of 5 km in 25 minutes, with the first 1 km at a 10 sec slower “warm up” target pace.
  • For interval training, repeating segments can be specified using e.g. “4x(1 4:00, 0.3 5:00,)”. Where the “,” instead of a “;” makes the pacer time reset when shifting between segments.
  • Segments can also be LAP button triggered or with a time duration. E.g. “L 5:30, 12:00 4:00” is a Cooper test with warm up until the LAP button is pressed, followed by a 12 min run at target pace 4:00. A sliding target pace is also possible, useful for e.g. slowly accelerating long runs.
  • Insert the data field in a data screen with a single field (full screen) layout, and additional configurable running information in top and bottom fields will be provided. E.g. the pace required rest of the race to meet race goal.
  • Distance correction in percentage can be configured, since GPS devices often reports a bit longer distance than the actual race distance.
  • Distance correction by LAP button press. When next to a race marker in a race, say a 5 km marker, press the LAP button on the watch, and the elapsed distance will be corrected to 5 km.
  • Pacing, LAP and segment alerts can be configured.
  • Optional FIT file recording, for ahead/behind graph in Garmin Connect.
  • And, much more …

  • Release 2.5: On devices where the data field is not displayed prior to the run, like Venu and Vivoactive, the pre-run information will now be displayed until 40 meters have been elapsed. This fixes a problem in case automatic cycling through activity screens is enabled.

The “2nd field” display mode has been discontinued to free up memory. Please migrate to “Full screen” mode instead.

  • Release 2.6 - Added support for Fenix 7 series, Epix (Gen 2), and Venu 2 Plus.

  • Hi, I am trying to define interval training 5x 2 km at pace 3:50, with 3 min rest between them. So the formula is 5x(3:50 2; 6:00 3:00,), but I get the message "Invalid target". Is the definition correct please? And is it possible to define the rest part just by time, with no pace target? According to your example in the documentation - Cooper test - the definition should work by using pace and time, but it does not...

  • The Pacer need to have a target pace specified for once the segments are done. I will get that clarified in the user guide!

    This should do the trick:  5x(3:50 2; 6:00 3:00,) 6:00

  • Thank you very much for your fast answer, this really works! By the way I like your solution very much, especially big numbers on the display are fantastic, and it is shown just what is needed for effective training - I will also review the app in the store!

  • Release 2.7 - Changed to less bright/intense colors for devices with an AMOLED display.

  • Release 3.0 - A major update!

IMPORTANT: Order is reversed for segments in new version 3.0. Enter distance first, then target pace, e.g. “2 4:00”. Changed since this is the order in which most specify intervals, like “run 2 km at pace 4:00”.

Major update offering presets for often used training sessions, LAP triggered segments, many new data field options, and more! See new user guide Note that many of the new features require a newer Garmin device. App name changed since a new “Advanced R&T Pacer” is now also available. This new App offers configurable screen layouts with 3, 4 or 5 data fields. Give it a try, see: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/fed825a9-07bb-40fc-b272-17b37af6f6e2

Going forward, I'll discontinue announcing updates in this forum. For support, feel free to use this forum or use "Contact Developer" form in App store.
