Data Field: Readable Race & Training Pacer

The Readable Race & Training Pacer data field will show the number of seconds you are ahead or behind a specified target pace or race goal. Somewhat like the Garmin RacePro and Virtual Pacer functionality, although much more advanced and versatile.

Maximum readability is achieved by using the largest possible custom font that can fit the data field! So, if you have a hard time reading small numbers, like me at the end of a hard race, and prefer not to run with classes, this is the Pacer App for you!

You may also try the related Advanced R&T Pacer, which offers more screen layout options but offers less readability. See https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/fed825a9-07bb-40fc-b272-17b37af6f6e2.

The Readable R&T Pacer App offers many advanced features for training, running tests, and accurate race pacing:

  • Either a target pace or a race goal, with optional “warm up” segments can be specified. Basic examples are “5:00”, “5@25:00” and “1 -10; 5@25:00”. The later example results in a race goal of 5 km in 25 minutes, with the first 1 km at a 10 sec slower “warm up” target pace.
  • For interval training, repeating segments can be specified using e.g. “4x(1 4:00, 0.3 5:00,)”. Where the “,” instead of a “;” makes the pacer time reset when shifting between segments.
  • Segments can also be LAP button triggered or with a time duration. E.g. “L 5:30, 12:00 4:00” is a Cooper test with warm up until the LAP button is pressed, followed by a 12 min run at target pace 4:00. A sliding target pace is also possible, useful for e.g. slowly accelerating long runs.
  • Insert the data field in a data screen with a single field (full screen) layout, and additional configurable running information in top and bottom fields will be provided. E.g. the pace required rest of the race to meet race goal.
  • Distance correction in percentage can be configured, since GPS devices often reports a bit longer distance than the actual race distance.
  • Distance correction by LAP button press. When next to a race marker in a race, say a 5 km marker, press the LAP button on the watch, and the elapsed distance will be corrected to 5 km.
  • Pacing, LAP and segment alerts can be configured.
  • Optional FIT file recording, for ahead/behind graph in Garmin Connect.
  • And, much more …

    Race Pacer":

    Hi.
    Great app thanks.
Were you aware that when viewing your run on Garmin Connect the graph only displays the sections where you are ahead of pace.

The following additional info has been provided:

    • Device Name: Fenix 5x
    • Firmware Version: 15.40
  • Hi

    Thank you for the feedback!

Yes, I am aware. This I have only seen occur in the Garmin Connect App. If you check out the same graph on Garmin Connect Web it should display just fine: https://connect.garmin.com

Not sure why and when it happens, sometimes it works, sometimes not. But it is for sure a bug in the Garmin App, so not something I can fix unfortunately.

    Regards,

    Hr. Mortensen

  • Released ver 1.2: Added support for Rey, Darth Vader, MARQ Golfer, and Venu Mercedes-Benz® Collection. Updated layout for several devices, including Forerunner 945, Fenix 6s, Fenix 6s Pro, Venu, Vivoative 4, & Vivoative 4s

  • Garmin Forerunner 735XT? Possible to slide target pace from initial 5:00/km to 3:00/km during let's say 5 minutes. Then I could use this when doing Conconi test.

  • Hi

    Thankyou for your feedback!

Unfortunately 735XT has not been updated by Garmin to support App SDK 3.x which is a requirement for RARP. This is why 735XT is not supported. With respect to sliding target pace, that I could add to the backlog if still interested. It would need to be sliding over a distance though, not over a time period, due to how RARP is internally designed.  So, e.g. linearly sliding from 5:00/km to 3:00/km over 2 km. So, a target pace at 1 km of 4:00/km.

  • Hi,

Sounds great. Yes, I'm still interested in about sliding target pace over a distance, since I can purchase supported device like ForeRunner 935 or Forerunner 945 to use it.

Alternatively, if it's easier to just name start pace e.g. 5min/km, and then to slide target pace e.g. 1min/km faster until forever, that would do the trick as well.

Both described approaches can be used to set up any practice like:
    - slowly accelerating long training like e.g. Kenyans do
    - Conconi testi
    - etc

  • I kind'a like the idea! Sliding warm up might also be useful for some vs the "step wise" approach. I'm a bit concerned about the memory though. Anyway, I'll look into it!

  • It proved not to be a problem memory wise!

So, next release will enable a sliding target pace from one segment to the next. E.g. “6:00 2, 5:00 1.25 > 3:00” will - after a 2 km slow warm up with pace 6:00 - make RARP target a pace sliding linearly from 5:00 to 3:00 over 1.25 km, which will take 5 minutes if run correctly.

I´m looking into a few other enhancements, so it may take a couple of weeks before next release.

Thank you for the good idea!

  • Great to hear! It will be very useful.
