This will provide access to data from thousands of weather stations in the "Weather Underground". Only tested in the US, but I understand it's available in many other locations.

Not just the weather in your town, but it could be your own back yard, if you have a weather station connected to WU!

To use this widget, you WILL NEED an "APIKEY" from WU. You can get one for no cost but only if if have a weather station that sends data to WU,

.
Many of the following posts are for the old version of this widget which is no longer available, so check at the end for info on the new version.

  • Wrong Data Showing now

Last night we had a wind storm and I was checking the wind speeds on my watch regularly. It indicated exactly what the speeds were and seemed 100% accurate.

This morning however when I request data, I am not getting accurate data. I am getting data that doesn't match the WU sensor. Ie, wind is showing as under 5mph, while the sensor has shown wind in the upper teens, low 20's all morning.

Temps and pressure don't match either.

Could I have run into some API issue by checking too many times yesterday?
  • More info

A little bit of a mystery, but I looked to reset the setting on the widget and found that some numbers had been transposed.

In the settings it was set to - KWABELLI71

I had set it to - KWABELLI17 initially (100% sure this was what I had set as I copied and pasted from the WU page).

So, now I go in to reset it to KWABELLI17.... and also tried changing the display color.... and the setting is not sticking..... not even the color.

I removed the widget and reinstalled... Same result.... it is stuck at the improper KWABELLI71 and yellow screen.

    Weird.
  • Fixed

So I went in via the phone app and was able to reset the station ID, and all is well now.

No idea how it changed from KWABELLI17 to KWABELLI71 still, but at least I was able to get it fixed.

    Thanks!
  • It looks to me like the I7I one was wrong, as stations seem to have 4 chars for a city, and 2 or 3 digits for a specific station.

With adding the station name to app settings, it also adds a risk, as a typo can result in weird errors from WU - such as "Station Offline" when a bad name is entered. (I actually do very little to the data I get back from WU other than just display it. I even get the data in both F and C, and don't need to do any conversions).

If a station hasn't been reporting to WU, after a few hours, "estimated" should appear on the bottom line time stamp.
  • Station

I had only ever set the station from the computer, and had copied and pasted it right into the data field, so I am not sure how it got switched. Anyhow, it is all working now.

Thanks for your work on this.

So, does my FR235 have to be connected to my phone for this widget to work?
  • Yes. The Garmin devices use the Garmin Connect Mobile app as a bridge to the internet.

Travis is correct. It gets it's data from the internet. If you're not connected over BT to your phone, you'll get a message that says "no phone!"

There is an app of mine that uses a Tempe Sensor which will show you just the current Temperature without the internet, but requires a Tempe.

OK, thanks. I did get the no phone display. I thought the info may have somehow been downloaded using the watch's gps. I do a lot of hiking and snowmobiling in the Cascade's where I don't have cell service and I thought if this widget used the gps for info I wouldn't have to look up in the sky like our ancestors. LOL. By the way, I love your "Hike" app. Well done!
