Weather Underground widget

Available in the app store! For the vivoactive and new forerunners!

This will provide access to data from thousands of weather stations in the "Weather Underground". Only tested in the US, but I understand it's available in many other locations.

Not just the weather in your town, but it could be your own back yard, if you have a weather station connected to WU!

To use this widget, you WILL NEED an "APIKEY" from WU. You can get one for no cost but only if if have a weather station that sends data to WU,

.
Many of the following posts are for the old version of this widget which is no longer available, so check at the end for info on the new version.

  • Nice job! I use WU a lot on my iPhone! Great to see it coming on my F3
  • I'll try to port it to the f3, but right now, it's for the va and the new forerunners. I "think" the F3 should work fine, but I've never even seen an f3! If I do post a f3 version, be kind! :)

Update: just tried it in the Simulator for the f3, and I'll have to play around with fonts for it, so it could take a few days.
  • I'm really glad to see this; thank you for your efforts!

I'm experiencing something with this app that I experience with WU's phone apps as well. I have a weather station sending data to WU (KTXROUND17), but when I launched this app, the data is coming from another weather station in town (further away than mine - my GPS synch for the data on your app was done from maybe 30' away from my station's recorded coordinates.)

Might there be a means in the future to force the data to come from a specific station? I suspect that this association with a more distant station is a fluke of WU's, not anything with your app, particularly as I experience the same thing when I open WU's phone apps.

Thanks again - even without the ability to select/force a station, this is a great app!
  • That seems to be something with WU. I send it GPS, and it often uses a station a few blocks away, when I have one in my back yard. I think they go not only by GPS, but the most recent data also comes into play. If a station is transmitting to WU every minute, it seems to get preference over a closer one that's a few minutes older.

I've found I can walk down the block, and I get my station. (I've learned that I get to a certain house, it always finds my station..)

That's why I cache the station name and not GPS. I can walk down the block, fire up GPS, it finds my station, and from then on, it shows my station's data, until I fire up GPS again.

After it knows a WU station name it uses that to get the data, and it only uses GPS again if you request it to do so. (or you have the app setting that says "use GPS every time")

    ----------------------------------------------
Update: I actually started this widget last march, but until "apps settings" because available where entering the API KEY became possible, It's not been in the store.

What I think I'll do, is with "app settings", allow users to enter a WU station name, and then avoid the "how far do I have to go so WU gives my my station" problem. I was so used to doing that, that I didn't think of adding it to settings!
  • Thanks! In the meantime, I'll leave the setting to acquire GPS position each time and ping it as I walk around the neighborhood (which I do daily) and when it hits my station, I'll change that setting. My weather station delivers the "RapidFire" updates to WU every couple of seconds, so data currency is very strong.

Version 0.53a is in the store and you should automatically get the update. With it, you can enter a station name, and it will also show the last one it used.

(it was actually a minor change. All I had to do was make the station name configurable.)
  • That was quick!

I've installed 0.53a, and have gone to the Manage Apps function in Garmin Express. I've changed the Station ID to mine (it showed up as the automatically detected station in that field) and switched the Always Update GPS to off. Saved the config & synched. After the watch restarts, the app goes back to the "default" station.

After reattaching the Vivoactive to the docking station & restarting Garmin Express & going back into Manage Apps, the settings had reverted back to the default station and Always Update GPS back to On. I can change them to the desired station and Always Update GPS to off and save the configuration, then go back into it, and the settings I have input still remain. After a synch and Vivoactive restart, the station on the Vivoactive has gone back to the default. Going back into Garmin Express again has the settings back to the default station and GPS updates on.

    Vivoactive firmware 3.30
    Garmin Express version 4.11.0

Gave a 5 star review at the CIQ store by the way - I'm so appreciative of your doing this, and I'm sure a lot of other people will be as well.
  • Let me look into this. Can you try the app settings from Garmin Connect Mobile on iOS or Andriod? (it's working fine for me with GCM Android and garmin Express).

Try just turning GPS always off, saving it, and then see if that what happens on the watch.

Then try setting the station name, and see if that works.

Thanks Oh, if you do this with GCM, do it when the widget isn't running, but you're on the watchface.
  • OK, made the changes (both station name and GPS off) on GC Mobile and it stuck just fine. Sweet; thank you.
  • Please add epix support please !!!!
