Weather Underground widget

Available in the app store! For the vivoactive and new forerunners!

This will provide access to data from thousands of weather stations in the "Weather Underground". Only tested in the US, but I understand it's available in many other locations.

Not just the weather in your town, but it could be your own back yard, if you have a weather station connected to WU!

To use this widget, you WILL NEED an "APIKEY" from WU. You can get one for no cost but only if if have a weather station that sends data to WU,

.
Many of the following posts are for the old version of this widget which is no longer available, so check at the end for info on the new version.

  • Understand, thanks, so there is nothing I can do from a users perspective to fix this?

Another question: if I set the current location in the settings, what affect does that have? Will "Get Current Location" in the app then always return the one set in the settings?

Although that is probably not a common use case, for me it would be a neat feature to be able to define multiple homes. We split our time between two locations and have our own weather stations in both, it would be great to be able to access both via the app.

  • With home and current, current is the one that weather is requested for, while home is your home station.  Let's say you go on a trip, and you do a "get current location".  That will show the weather for where you are on your trip.

You can then use the menu to set current to home, and see the weather back at your house.

Adding multiple "home" stations wouldn't be something that's commonly used.

  • A great app/widget thanks for keeping it updated - can I check if complications are available on the instant 2s - I can't seem to find them ?

    Andy

  • The Instinct2 doesn't have complications.  This widget publishes them on devices that support complications, like the fr955, 965, vivoactive 5, etc.

Here's one of my watch faces that can use the complications I publish with this widget or my OWM widget, but only on devices that support complications:

  • Thanks for the reply - I will have to find out which watches allow complications ... It's confusing as the instincts allow you to change what data is shown on the watch face (which would normally be seen as a complication) but I guess don't allow widgets to write to them ?

  • Hello! I got the widget working and it's great. I would love that there was a watchface though in which you can use some of the data coming from WU to be used as data fields in that watchface.. Do you know if it's possible or if someone has already created that watchface?

  • Yes. I have one!  It works with garmin weather, wu, and owm.  It's called Simple Lean G2

This will only work on devices that support complications

Here's a link.  With on-device settings, you select your weather source

You can also use Garmin's FaceIt to see the complication data.

In this context, "complications" means Connect IQ complications: specifically, the ability for a CIQ watchface to display information published either by a CIQ app or built-in code. Additionally, the CIQ complication system allows a 3rd party watchface to support opening the associated app when the user long-presses a complication. Finally, Face-It watchfaces can display information published as a complication by CIQ apps.

The Instinct 2 "family" of watches has an older CIQ version - 3.4 - which doesn't support complications.

For devices which don't support CIQ complications, 3rd-party CIQ watchfaces can still access - via older methods - most of the built-in data that is also available in the CIQ complication system, but they can't access any data published by 3rd-party apps as complications, and they don't support the long-press feature described above. Note that there is *some* built-in data (like training status and race predictions) which is only available to CIQ watchfaces via complications.

One way to see which devices support CIQ complications is to open the following page and click on View Devices, next to Supported Devicesdeveloper.garmin.com/.../Complications.html

In general, most currently supported watches - released around 2022 [*] - should support Connect IQ complications, along with a few older models [released in 2021].

[*] e.g. if your watch is still getting beta firmware and new features, it probably supports complications.
