Data Field: Dozen Run Fields

Dozen Run, Swim, Paddle and Cycle Data Fields
After others are forcing you to pay for these applications, so I decided to make a great data field(s) and then keep them free. I'm a Software engineer, sponsored runner and run coach, I combined my engineering and running knowledge to bring you these streamline applications.

I put thousands of hours of bench and field testing these simple applications. So, consider a small donation.

Install Instructions:
This Data field needs to be added to the (specific) app within your watch to view.

This is a data field not an application and needs to be added to a single data screen within an application.
a.) Goto settings,apps,run,data screen,screen 1
b.)Set Layout to 1 Field
c.) Set Field 1 to ConnectIQ Fields, DozenRun
d.) run happy!

INSTALL ISSUES:
-"!" Issue: If you receive a "!", completely uninstall, reboot and then reinstall. The Setting file changed and the automated Garmin install is not replacing the setting file.
-Download Issue: if you have the "App requires an update before install", hard reboot your watch TWICE and install again.
-TIMER Issue: If you update/install and you see the TIMER and don't see the Dozen data field.
--The data field update or install may require a restart of watch.
--Or the data field needs added to the built-in application, again.

These are becoming a Data Field Suite, where all field are similar making it easier to read while in an activity.

The Dozen fields are intended for training, the data field works fine for speed work, track or races, but readability in these conditions maybe tougher.

IMPORTANT: If you have a Question, recommendation or problem.
Please provide as much as possible (for example the following):

1.) Watch type, Watch firmware version and ConnectIQ version.
2. programmed from Garmin Connect (phone type) or Garmin Express
3.) Which data field
4.) description of issue
5.) if its a "!" error include the error log from your watch. Connect your watch to a PC using USB cable. The error log is located x:\GARMIN\APPS\LOGS. copy the listing and paste in the post.

Description for all fields
--All watch types are support for all data fields. Coded simple to keep bugs at minimum.
-Race Prediction completely configurable for any distance. Distance is entered in meters. Enter 1%-2% longer distance to adjust for normal GPS error and better race prediction.
-Cadence either from watch, footpod or crank cadence. Color coded to provide instant readability
-Heart Rate field is configurable to several methods: calculation (default), manual entered max HR, or individual zones Color coded to provide instant readability
-Pace/Speed is a rolling average to give a smooth reading configurable from 1 second to 120 seconds (Metric or statute by user setting)
-Distance is the total distance for the activity (Metric or statute by user setting)
-Timer is the actual time of the active time. Not Elapsed time.
- Battery meter uses the entire screen for reliability and acts as a divide to help focus one the upper fields.
-Avg Pace\Speed is a Garmin's provided datafield. (Metric or statute by user setting)
-Calories is the activity calories.
-Elevation based on Garmin's values. (Metric or statute by user setting)
-Time of day either in 12hr or 24 hour (based on user setting)
-(Fenix3/920)Auto background color Black or White background based on app settings
-(230/235) Configurable background color Black or White background (user configuration)
-GPS uses same indicator as iPhone for GPS signal. 5=full, 4=usable, 3=poor, 2=unused, 1= last location & 0 = no GPS
-Blue Tooth connectivity is shown as a blue "B"
-Paddle Stroke distance is a calculated by actual speed / cadence. Displayed in Meters/Feet.

  • Hi once again,
I have made some more tests.
I have tried with 180sec and I don't get any crash, but the pace is not reliable I was running with a pace of 30 sec less than what was shown. I have tried also with 120sec and I got more or less the same result.
Next time I am going to try with 60 sec or 30 in order to see if the data are more reliable. For sure I will let you know.
It looks like with this big timeframe the pace is not very reliable.

Have you made some tests too?

Thank you very much I really appreciate your work

Thanks! it turning into a busy hobby with the Garmin Compiler changing so frequently.

As for the Pace, I'll look into the Pace at 30 and 60 seconds.
    Couple of answers for you.

The reason the rolling pace is fast when you start it is empty (clean). there is no values in the buffer, every second the buffer grows by one sample until it reaches the max value.
If using 180 sec, Its a true average of 180 samples one every second. for example, if you would be doing a tempo run. Starting at a warm up pace of 8:00 min/mile for 5 minutes, then start at tempo pace 6:00 min/mile, the rolling buffer would need three minutes to roll out previous warmup pace values. During the three minutes the pace would slowly ramp up at 90 sec.
At the stop condition i.e. less than 60:00 min/mile(really slow) the buffer is emptied. Thus starting a clean buffer as i explained in the previous sentences.

Another way to explain rolling pace it is a window, in that window is the history of pace values for a known history, of in this case history of 180 seconds. Once you ran 181 seconds the window moves and the 1st sample (oldest sample is discarded) and the average is recalculated with the new 180 second window. Once you ran 182 seconds the window moves and the 2nd sample is discarded and so on.

Since running is a slow sport a lower window of 6-12 for instant pace is better for running. I typically use only 17 seconds which is for me ~100 meters. i.e. my 100m pace window.

    Ill still check it out.
  • how to customise

Hi; the screen looks great however i would like to know how to customise certain things you say is possible: like rolling pace etc

also seems timer is working even when i pause the watch; i know there are problem with lap time is it possible to have timer as time not elapsed time?

thanks for the a looks great
  • So what's the status now regarding fw6.52b and CIQ1.2.2?
Is Run/Bike working well with that software?

Ah, I thought there could be a problem updating to CIQ1.2.2 but that was already ok with the previous version (1.5).
  • Installation

I'm sure this isn't a Dozen Run issue. I just brought a FR235, and installed Dozen Run, seemed to sync and install fine, how do I access Dozen Run on my watch, very basic question, I can't seem to find it.
    Thanks

  • I used the app on my bike rode on fenix 3 with sw 6.50. The app seemed ok but after some time I noticed the current speed was 0.0kmh, even though the dostance was increasing
  • Issues installing App

Can anyone offer some advise on how to activate/set up the dozen cycle fields app? have downloaded/installed it and synced the device, but cannot find how to access the app or view the data fields, tried creating a custom app and adding in the dozen cycle data fields but can only see the standard 4 data fields, thought this was just an app which would appear alongside the others, sure i'm missing something obvious, anyone help?

Got exactly the same issue on my fenix 3
  • Installation, Setup and Use

Well, installation is just straight forward I guess.
This is a Connect IQ Data Field. It's not a separate app. You will have to set it up as a Data Screen in your regular Run/Bike app.

Setup is done in Carmin Connect Mobile.
Go to More (bottom right) -> Garmin Devices -> [Your Device] -> Connect IQ apps -> Data Fields -> Dozen Run/Bike -> Settings.

To Use it you go to Settings on your watch -> [App where you want to use it] -> Data Screens -> [Desired Screen]:
    Layout: 1 Field
Field 1: Choose Connect IQ -> Dozen Run/Bike

If you've done this and still have problems you should start with rebooting the watch. Long press on Light button and then choose Power Off. After a few seconds you press again to Start up.
  • Set up

I'm not normally completely useless but I have no idea how to use this on my 630? I have looked on the Garmin support and manual and I can't see how to install data field apps and it doesn't show up on my iq apps section on my watcheither? It does say that it's downloaded and installed though in my app management section on connect. Help!!
