GDVC 2022 (Oct 12th)

I was hoping it might be another in-person summit, but I guess it's still too sooon.

With in person, it wasn't only the breakouts and info, but the social side.  A chance to hang out with other devs and the Garmin folks for a couple days.

I'm pretty sure AlphaMonkeyC still owes me a beer from the last in-person summit! See no evil

  • Nope, not for data fields during activities.  Kind of annoying when the activity recording part is the main reason many get a garmin over other devices

  • so many people have no idea the ConnectIQ store even exists.  or if they do, they just think of all of the low quality apps that seem to swamp out any of the good ones.  Garmin doesn't help themselves by allowing low reviewed apps to be shown in the Trending or Featured or New sections.

Nick / is super passionate but is too far down in the weeds imho.  Nobody at Garmin seems to really care about the most important piece of the puzzle, the actual Store.  If you can't pull in customers, then how do you expect suppliers (ie us developers) to make good product.

  • Garmin doesn't help themselves by allowing low reviewed apps to be shown in the Trending or Featured or New sections.

I'm not sure this is really that simple.  For fitness stuff an app could be very useful to a small market and still be a good app.  You might not care about muscle oxygen data, and guessing the number of people with a sensor may be small vs number of garmins, but a good muscle oxygen sensor app should still be shown as one of the good apps.  I'm not sure that you really want all apps to target having a large appeal.  This makes it hard to really identify what is a good app.  Maybe if garmin could hand curate apps?

Not sure this task is that hard to do, but is asking garmin to play favorites

  • poor choice of words on my part.  should have been more clear and said "poorly reviewed apps".  taking a look right now, the #1 trending app is Stravas Relative Effort with 2.5 stars.  Why promote something like that as opposed to all of the apps with 4 star or better reviews.  And "most popular" is Spotify with 2.5 stars.   Why would someone want to download poorly reviewed apps?  It's like running a grocery store and putting all the spoiled food out at the very front of the store.

  •   Nobody at Garmin seems to really care about the most important piece of the puzzle, the actual Store.

Idk how many people use the Garmin Connect store website, but since the beginning it's had an issue where any listing image that's not a perfect square is distorted to make it into one. That means there's a ton of apps whose listing image is basically a distorted Garmin watch / screenshot, which looks terrible IMO.

To me this kind of thing is yet another "lack of attention to detail" issue. The problem could've been solved by either blocking the use of non-square images or allowing the dev to crop the image upon upload (just like so many other apps and sites), but Garmin took the path of least resistance. To be fair, I don't think the Connect IQ store app on Android / iOS has this problem.

Maybe if garmin could hand curate apps?

Isn't this kind of what's supposed to be happening with the new-ish "Connect IQ store on device" feature? I think DC Rainmaker mentioned that the selection of apps was lacklustre tho.

  • I missed State of the Union presentation, and now for the life of me I can't find the video. When and where will it be published?

Also, I saw in the news (https://the5krunner.com/2022/10/12/garmin-app-watchface-of-the-year-2022-ciq-winners-and-nominees-announced/) that Garmin announced The Best Garmin Apps and Watchfaces of 2022. Would someone please point me to the official announcement? Thanks!

  • It's usually a week or two later, but it's usually just the breakouts (without the Q&A part) and without things like the "State of the Union"

  • Last year "State of the Union" was published and it was kind of a big deal...

  • That was DCR if I recall.  This year it was the product  managers for different things (fitness, outdoor, edger), And Alpha Monkey did his part.
