Impossible to install apps on Edge 520 with the Connect IQ mobile app

My Edge 520 never popped up in the IQ app (latest iOS Version) and so i deleted the IQ and Connect App and ignored the Edge 520 in Bluetooth settings.

1. Reinstalled the IQ app and logged in > my Edge 520 is now shown up as not connected in my devices.
2. Paired the Edge with the mobile phone > the 520 is still shown as not connected.

3. Reinstalled the Garmin Connect App > the 520 connects to the phone but instantly vanishes from the IQ app/devices.

Deleting the Garmin Connect App and the Edge will appear again within the IQ app as an unpaired device…

this is strange and it's completely impossible now to install any app on an Edge 520 device since there is no webstore anymore.

  • I wonder if this is also some new bug. And where can that bug be? I'm the iOS Connect IQ app? Or are the Garmin Connect and Connect IQ using 2 different apis and in one of them there is this bug? ...

  • my Edge 1000 is doing the exact same its very annoying

  • The Edge 1000 is the same API Level: 2.4., so the other 3 devices from this level (Edge Explore, FR 735XT, vivoactive HR) should be affected too.

But i think this will never be fixed by Garmin - theese are old devices…annoying yes, since i recently replaced the battery of my Edge 520.

  • I don't have such old devices, but occasionally I also have situations when either my edge explore 2 or some watch has the green dot in Garmin Connect app but is "disconnected" in Connect IQ. There are 2 things that might help:

1 do sync in Garmin Connect again and again until you see that it really reached the end (sometimes it stops in the middle) When it finished then check again in Connect IQ app

2 sync with Garmin Express and try to see if after it's fully synced maybe it'll work in Connect IQ.

  • no chanche, you only see your device within the Connect IQ app when the Garmin Connect app is not installed on your phone!

  • Definitely not the case. I have both apps installed for years. I used it with multiple devices. My kids use it that way on your phones. It works. I suspect that when Connect IQ doesn't see the device as connected it can be caused by a couple of reasons:

In my case I think it means that the Garmin Connect app is still syncing with the device in the background. That's why opening the Garmin Connect, clicking on sync and waiting until it actually finishes (not only the rotating logo stops in the middle, but it actually reaches the end of the circle) and then opening the Connect IQ works

BTW if You have Garmin Explore then it can also cause it (depending on device)

If it never worked on your phone then maybe there's some issue related to your phone or maybe the permissions of the Connect IQ app

  • suspect that when Connect IQ doesn't see the device as connected it can be caused by a couple of reasons

there is some misunderstanding here. The Connect IQ app has no device, only if you delete the Connect app (iOS) - then you get the edge 520 as an unpaired device, but you are unable to install anything. You need the Connect app, and if installing again, the Edge 520 will vanish instantly from the Connect IQ (iOS)app devices tab.
This is not related only  to my phone - i tested this on two different phones with different iOS Versions and an iPad - the result is always the same

  • Anyway this seems to become more and more offtopic here. Even though the end-goal is to install a CIQ app, this sounds more like something for the Connect IQ forum:  Connect IQ Store iOS

You can also ask other users in the Edge forum: (no exact forum for these old devices though, but you'll get answers usually on other forums):  Sports & Fitness at least to confirm if this is really a bug for everyone or only some users experience it.

    Couple of possibilities:

1a) If you can get your hands on a cheap Android tablet or phone (maybe buy one used, or borrow one), maybe you can install an older version of the Connect IQ store Android app and see it if it works.

Ofc I'm assuming that this is a bug that only affects newer versions of the store app, and not something that somehow affects all versions (e.g. some kind of server-side issue).

Or maybe it's just a bug with the iOS app, and using even the latest version of the Android app would work.

1b) You could try running the Android CIQ store app in an Android emulator on your PC or Mac (ofc this is not so simple)

    2) Also, apps.garmin.cn (the Chinese version of the CIQ store) still works, so I can think of a couple of possibilities here:

    - someone could create a Chinese account and pair it with their device just to reverse engineer to web API for triggering an app download on next sync. Then they could try to use the same API with their regular Connect login. (Ofc this assumes that the same API would still work.)

    - someone could create a Chinese account and pair it with their device just for the purpose of downloading apps. I've found that it's entirely possible to pair two Connect accounts with the same device [*], but ofc you have to be careful not to accidentally sync the wrong Connect account with the device, as you can overwrite settings / user profile info (one way to mitigate this would be have the correct user profile data in the 2nd account)

[*] I did this bc my regular Connect account is separate from my dev account

    Ofc this assumes that:

    - it's possible for someone who doesn't live in China to create a Chinese Connect account

    - it's possible for a Chinese Connect account to pair with a non-Chinese device
