Why can't users install my app anymore?

My app was working fine and has many downloads but suddenly I started getting many emails from users who can't get the install to work. I tried to install on one of my own watches and it's doing the same thing. You press install, press accept on the permissions, the button shows the installing swirly and then the button goes back to install.

I had been telling the users that Garmin support will have to help as I can't control installation or payment issues but when I tried following my advice, the support person told me to contact the developer.

  • Interesting! My apps don't involve payment, and still I started to get these user messages in many languages, like "can't install and uninstall" which makes no sense (why would one want to uninstall if they couldn't install). I thought that the reason I started to get lot of these messages since the beginning of the summer is that Garmin changed Connect IQ app. See: https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/f/connect-iq-web-store/420029/users-get-confused-by-too-many-ways-to-contact-developer but now that you posted this, I'm not so sure any more.

What you write above is not very clear, but it does remind me 2 cases I encountered:

    - the case when your device has 32 slots of apps, and you have 32 apps installed, and then you are not able to upgrade any of them, until you delete one. But it shouldn't be the case for installation.

    - the case when I had a free app installed for more than a year, and that app was changed from free to Garmin Pay, and the app stopped working (crashes when I start it) and when I try to upgrade then it does similar things you described: the icon is rotating, but then it stops and the app is still not upgraded

  • The app has many downloads but last week I started getting quite a few installation issue emails from people. So I tried installing on a watch and can't get it to install either. I've tried deleting many things and still can't get it to work. You click the install button, it says installing, does that for a few seconds and then goes back to just saying install. The lack of errors there makes any kind of support or debugging impossible. I guess I'll upload a new version as maybe Garmin's copy is corrupted??

  • I used Garmin Express for the PC and the installation worked fine. I'm also wondering if it's an issues with the phone ConnectIQ app installing to a watch that isn't my primary watch?

  • It doesn't matter if it's a primary watch when you install apps. Either there WAS a bug in the backend when you tried with Connect IQ and it was fixed by the time you tried it with Garmin Express, or the 2 use different backends, or the bug is in Connect IQ itself...

  • Something else to try is to turn off your watch and phone at the same time, then turn them both back on and try installing again.  This has worked in the past.

  • The Garmin Express is copying over through the USB I thought? Similar to how I sideload when developing. I had it connected to the USB when I installed it.

  • Indeed. Ah, yeah, maybe it is not related to the Garmin backend. So probably a bug in the Connect IQ app
