Proof that GARMIN PAY is putting customers off from buying - 2 examples in 2 days

My Merchant status has only been verified for a few days and I have had 2 seperate aborted attempts at buying from the GARMIN Merchant system, that lost customers have taked the time to email me about.

"I'd like to purchase the Tactical V8 Pixel Perfect watchface but alas my Instinct 2 doesn't support Garmin Pay which is demanded in IQ Connect."

"Trying to pay from my Instinct 3 but my watch wants me told hold it close to the reader.  Holding it close to my phone does nothing.  Is their another way to pay.  This is my FAVORITE watch face!"

These are two contact emails from potential buyers who seem utterly confused by GARMIN PAY.

I had a look at the Instinct 3 Amoled product page to see howt GARMIN PAY is introduced, and the only mention on the main page is:

"GARMIN PAYTm CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS

Breeze through checkout lines or transit systems with participating providers."

Is it any wonder that potential buyers are put off by GARMIN PAY.

  • Yes, expect those messages coming in on a regular basis. People are confusing paying in the IQ-Store with Garmin-Pay contactless. This is part of my standard reply, maybe you send something similar:

Payment is handled through Garmin BUT this is not contactless payment "GarminPay" using the watch! They should have called store payment something like GarminWallet....

You need to add a credit card to your ConnectIQ-Store account:

    1. Visit the Connect IQ store.
    2. Select your profile icon in the upper right.
    3. Select Account Settings.
    4. Select Garmin Wallet.
    5. Select Add Payment Card.
    6. Follow onscreen instructions to update payment information.

Afterwards, you can buy an app with just one click. I think the process works very well. You can always get a full refund within 48 hours of purchasing in case you don't like the app.

  • has provided a sound answer. I'll ask whether we should consider some name changes to clarify things for the customer. Technically, the customer is using the Garmin Pay wallet, so it is still Garmin Pay, but not contactless payments.

  • I don't understand what that means:

Technically, the customer is using the Garmin Pay wallet, so it is still Garmin Pay, but not contactless payments.

There might be a confusion in what "Garmin Pay wallet" means? I mean, now that I think about it, it's really not clear even if I talk only about the touch less payment:

I have a fr245, a fenix6 and a fr965. fr245 doesn't have NFC, so it's pretty clear that "wallet" is not on it. When I upgraded to the fenix6 I started using Garmin Pay contactless. For this I had to add my card to the wallet on the watch. I mean that's the way I felt, right? It makes sense because on the watch I long press the light button and enter the code to open the "wallet". Which then has my card in it , and I can use it to pay for my ice cream during my beach run. Makes sense.

But then now, reading Brandon's comment I thought: maybe this is not how Garmin looks at Garmin Pay wallet? Can it be that what Garmin calls wallet is the data of my cards that is in the cloud and that I can see in the Garmin Connect phone app? It would make sense if Garmin Pay would work similar to how Google Play / Google wallet works: Google knows about my physical card and I can use it in different situations: I can buy goods in the Google online store (ie pixel phone), I can buy 100GB extension to my Gmail storage, I can pay with it online at different websites (not owned by Google) and finally, if I have a phone (not necessarily made by Google) that supports NFC (and I think I live in a country that is supported) I can use it to pay contactless with my phone.

I guess this (or part of it) is where Garmin is aiming at when they try to call both the contactless payment and the app-store payment Garmin Pay. But given the hard work Garmin put into confusing both users and CIQ developers about:

who, from which country can be a merchant

who, from which country can add a card to Garmin Pay

from which country's which bank the card can be

on which Garmin device it can be used (this one is the only clear one: needs NFC support)

that even SOME users who are not able to use Garmin Pay contactless for various reasons listed above CAN use it to pay in the app shop

    etc...

it's no wonder that everyone is still confused about all this....
