Track multiple activities on Garmin Watch

Any chance of being able to track multiple activities? I have a Garmin Forerunner 645 watch and would like to do the following.

Example :

Start 1st activity - Run to gym, activate resume later.

Start 2nd activity - Record a gym workout, end session.

Resume 1st activity- run workout.

  • Yes, but you need a watch supporting the Multisport feature. You can then use the option Change sport to add legs of different (or same) sports to the common multisport activity.

  • Which watch do you have?
    Epix 2 PRO

    > you can set a hot key to "Change Sport."

I used it - and after 3x switch I cannot more switch and it crashed

and there is nowhere " Garmin Support " - there I cannot report this situations - which I am really not satisfied

  • Which watch do you have? If it's the 645 as the OP stated, it won't be possible. If you have a newer multisport-capable watch, you can set a hot key to "Change Sport." Just start any activity, like run, then when you want to switch to a different sport, press the hot key combo you set up. When you stop/save the activity it will show up on Garmin Connect as MULTISPORT with all the different sports listed in one activity.

  • Thank you. Yes,the 645 doesn't have the multisport feature and I'm not planning on getting an upgraded garmin anytime soon. I'm a social jogger. I only do ultra marathons, not triathlons, so not much use for those functions, but appreciate the feedback.

  • Multisport is not only for triathlons. It is usefull for any combimation of sports, exactly as you asked in the OP. However, it is very unlikely Garmin would retrofit the FR645 with this feature

  • yes I had set " hot key : long press start " for that - and after 3x it crashed

  • To be fair, OP asked to be able to:

    - start first activity, resume later

    - start 2nd activity, end

    - resume first activity

i.e. My understanding is that the 2nd activity should be started without ending the first activity, so that the first activity can be resumed afterwards.

This is pretty much impossible with either Resume Later or multisport, as Garmin typically (*) won't let you record overlapping activities. (As soon as you select Resume Later, you're unable to launch any other built-in activity or CIQ app)

The best you can do is record 3 activities (whether it's 3 separate activities, or 3 legs of a multisport activity.)

(*) I actually found one exception to this rule:

    - Start recording an activity and select Resume Later

    - Open the stopwatch, start the timer, stop the timer and save the laps as an activity

    - Resume the original activity

Unfortunately, the stopwatch activity probably won't have all the stats and features you need, unless all you care about is time and laps. (You can change the activity type after the fact, but it probably won't help much.) For example, it doesn't look like HR is recorded (although the stopwatch lap UI suggests that it should be -- the lap list has a column for HR, but every value is just  "--".)

(This also works if you launch the stopwatch during an activity that's currently recording, whether paused or not, so that's technically 2 scenarios where you can record overlapping activities.)
