Duplicate entries in Apple Health

I am on iOS 11 with the latest version of Garmin Connect. When looking in Apple Health I see lots of duplicate entries (same time and duration) from Garmin Connect in my activities. A quick Google shows people were having this issue back in 2015 but I've not seen any simple solution to stop it from happening and it is becoming more and more irritating.

I know Apple Health may not be the best application but I use it as a central repository.

Does anyone have a simple solution for this (other than buying an Apple Watch and using a Wahoo Tickr with the watch).

thanks

Alex

  • thats because the field is "walking + running" distance. They dont split it out. I find I can send that directly to AH from GC. That way I get credit for steps taken as well. Its only "workouts" that goes through Strava.

And to me yes, it seems to be a GC issue. If it were AH, then other items would be duplicating (not just from within AH, but from other apps writing to AH like Strava) which they dont. AH seems smart enough in most cases to not count the dupes but if you use 3rd party apps like Healthfit, all their cool trending graphs, etc are skewed.

I'll see if I can post a screenshot of my set up.

  • I still hate that I have to funnel something through Strava because one unintended consequence is when I turned on Strava to AH sync, it wrote dupes for all my previously uploaded workouts (where I had gone Garmin to AH direct). So some of the older stuff had two entries for everything (one from Strava, one from Apple Watch Fitness or Garmin).

  • I think it’s unacceptable to give away your very personal data to third company because Garmin refuses to fix it for many years. Frankly I suspect that Garmin Connect is maintained by 2 programers (which are changed every year) without test team to do proper testing and verification. I hope i am wrong.

  • yeah this ecosystem stuff can get annoying. It's reason enough to get on one side of the fence or the other (all Garmin and ignore Apple Health - OR - Apple Health, sell the Garmin gear and buy Wahoo).

As an experiment, I just turned "Workouts" back on for GC to see what happens (Strava was off). I did 3 synchs (1 automatic letting the app do its thing and 2 manual requests). In AH, I noticed 2 entries for every workout GC wrote. So 3 synch attempts and 2 entries. I am not gutsy enough to keep trying to see how many times it keeps replicating.

I also noticed that from a fresh synch (where I had deleted all Garmin "workouts") - it wrote workouts only back to October 2020 and the dupes only went as far back to March 4, 2021. Weird behavior indeed.

  • Yeah, cause in october the connect app deleted everyones apple health data.

  • Still an issue using a Fenix5, iPhoneXS and most recent iOS as of today. Garmin please fix this.

  • I am on day three of the 'workouts only' push from GC>Strava>AH with everything else going direct from GC>AH and I don't see any duplication.  I haven't confirmed if steps are coming across.

  • Originally I was seeing roughly 25 days prior getting duped, but I didn't let it go much longer than that before breaking the sync.

I am stuck on the fence.  I haven't fully committed to either camp and I can't lie.. I often wear both devices (sometimes I wear the AW on an ankle) just to have the Apple integration without having to carry my phone.

  • Hi all,

I found a way how to make it work. I was triggered by the solution I could find above. I have disabled the direct link between Garmin connect and Apple Health. Instead: I link Garmin Connect with Strava and link Strave with Apple health. Now my work outs are not duplicated anymore. So definitely an issue but the workaround is working (and it’s free)

  • LOL....  I mean no disrespect.. but that solution was mentioned a long while back.  That's how I have it setup as well.  Been using that for a few weeks.  I have all stats enabled in GC to AH except the workouts.  This allows for steps and such to be sync'd from the Fenix.  Workouts are disabled and sync as you mention, through Strava.
