Okay guys, I resolved the issue, hopefully it works for you as well:
Opening Garmin Express and going to 'about Garmin Express'' I realised I had Version 6.14.0.0 and there was a new version available but the application couldn't download and install the update directly from the application in Mac OS.
So I downloaded the latest version 6.15.0.0 seperately from the Garmin website and installed it over the old version I had. Then synchronised my Fenix 3 again and now I have recovered my training calendar!

I'm starting to think Garmin has no resources for solving this problem. For sure if you make code available on github, there is someone who will solve the issue.
Garmin forerunner 235.
Here's what I did to get the full workouts and calender back on the watch.
Logged into Garmin connect on the pc.
Went to training, then training plans.
Found the same plan as the lost plan.
Selected the plan and set the date as the same start date as the previous plan. Then scheduled it.
Now synch the watch.
Once the watch is updated the workouts and training plans will appear as before. There will be duplicated days though. i.e two same workouts planned a day.

I can confirm that Garmin Express 6.15.0.0 is able to load workouts in the calendar of my Forerunner 230. The ios apps still fail to do so.
