Auto power on and power off issues

Ever since adopting the Garmin Edge 820 I've encountered this issue that I've been unable to resolve.

The Edge 820 turns on automatically when connected to power, which is especially annoying if its paired with Bontrager Flare RT lights because they also turn on automatically.

The biggest issue is that it also turns on when disconnected from power, which requires user to wait up to 15 seconds for the unit to boot and then power off the unit so the battery doesn't die.

So, I spend most of my time interfacing with the Garmin Edge 820 powering it on and off and disabled the Bontrager Flare integration all together. Also, if you're not paying attention you may find yourself diligently charging your Edge and then finding the battery dead when you go to ride.

I've contacted Garmin about this with no good solutions.

I don't recall this being an issue with previous Garmin Edge models and this issue doesn't occur on the Wahoo Elememnt Bolt.

Garmin - please make this functionality configurable. ie: provide an option to disable the automatic power on feature when connecting and disconnecting from power.

If I'm missing something here, please share your advice.

Thanks!
  • As with most comments here, I completely agree that this is horribly annoying. It has caused me issues while on a bikepacking trip where I would plug in my 820 to charge while I sleep...as the device got to 100% the current draw went low enough that the battery simply shut off the USB port (fine!)...but that obviously turned on the 820, which completely emptied itself.

it's a completely useless feature that has frustrated me very much (above killing the irreplacable battery prematurely). Furthermore, this burns out the screen uselessly too (had many power outages at my place where I'd come back to the garage, a few days later, to see my device was "on" for no good reason).

now, of course, with the device now being frustrating slow and unusable without an external battery, I'm thinking of getting a 1040 solar, but I just saw the following in the manual :

"When you connect the device to a power source, the device turns on."

     I DON'T WANT THAT.....!

Is there a way we can get someone a bit more serious to look into their firmware? I don't want to buy a super-high priced device, that has an irreplacable battery, which behaves in a way of eating it up like a rockstar on coke.

Some other features that annoy the *** out of me (to save battery life):

    1. having to disable all sensors when I switch bikes
    2. having to disable blue tooth
    3. can't group sensors with a "bike profile"

All of the above is a royal PITA to go through the kludgy interface to manually switch on/off all those features each time I go on a different ride.
