Auto power on and power off issues

Ever since adopting the Garmin Edge 820 I've encountered this issue that I've been unable to resolve.

The Edge 820 turns on automatically when connected to power, which is especially annoying if its paired with Bontrager Flare RT lights because they also turn on automatically.

The biggest issue is that it also turns on when disconnected from power, which requires user to wait up to 15 seconds for the unit to boot and then power off the unit so the battery doesn't die.

So, I spend most of my time interfacing with the Garmin Edge 820 powering it on and off and disabled the Bontrager Flare integration all together. Also, if you're not paying attention you may find yourself diligently charging your Edge and then finding the battery dead when you go to ride.

I've contacted Garmin about this with no good solutions.

I don't recall this being an issue with previous Garmin Edge models and this issue doesn't occur on the Wahoo Elememnt Bolt.

Garmin - please make this functionality configurable. ie: provide an option to disable the automatic power on feature when connecting and disconnecting from power.

If I'm missing something here, please share your advice.

Thanks!

michaelfaas, share your solution with Garmin, www.garmin.com forms ideas

I also have Bontrager's Flare RT lights and they turned on while starting a treadmill run with the Forerunner 935 ;)
Never figured out how to get them to work properly.

Bold step, sell the Bontrager lights and acquire some from Garmin ?

  • Yeah, this is a f*%#ing annoying “feature” of the 820 that Garmin simply ignore and refuse to sort out.

I HATE the fact that it does this, and simply won’t stay off when I turn it off, regardless of whether I plug it in or unplug it from charging.

It’s a stupid thing to have, and I don’t understand why Garmin won’t do a software update to allow users to disable this feature if they want to.

Garmin - WHY won’t you fix this????

+1. It worked great  on the previous generation unit (800/810). I mean only the power off/on on connecting disconnecting the power cable..

  • Couldn't agree more, this drives me crazy too!!!

  • I asked the same darn question a year ago and nothing has changed. This is incredibly annoying. I had a 520 that was intelligent enough to auto power down, once unplugged from the charger, after 15 seconds.  We should at least have an option to configure the device the way we want it to behave. If I plug it into power to charge it, why does Garmin think I want to boot it up and start a ride? Just doesn't make sense.

  • Same here, this is a very annoying "feature".

  • Following....this "feature/configuration" is highly frustrating.

Same here.  Currently sitting at home waiting for unit to charge enough for my commute as it depleted itself last night after the pc it was connected to was switched off.

  • Agreed. I just missed logging a ride because it discharged itself once unplugged from the charger. Really daft behaviour
