Edge 25 and Speed Sensor setup issues

what is the proper way to get the magnetless speed sensor to work correctly?
I installed the sensor, my Edge 25 detects it right way, but it doesnt seem to do anything. All the time while riding in the forest my speed will drop to 0.0, and my mileage is way off at the end. If I lift the front of my bike and spin the tire it doesnt display any speed numbers.

My buddy has a 520 with the same sensor and his works perfect. If he spins his front tire the speed shows up and at the end of a ride he might show "12.2 miles" where as my unit will show "6.6miles".

Any tips or suggestions? I'm new to all this not sure what is wrong. Do I need to ride in the streets for a bit so the unit can calibrate properly? I dont see an option on the Edge 25 to manually put in tire size like the 520 has.

    Asian Edge?

OK, worked out why the Beta would not apply. My edge 25 is the Asian version which apparently receives updates later than the English one. Thanks ebay..

Oh by the way Edge 25 Beta 3.14 is out now!

  • Fed up waiting for Garmin to sort things out and I'm still not confident of how well the speed / sensor issue is being managed. There should be a default ability to input wheel size manually, so that a simple revolution / radius calculation is applied. What use is the sensor reading first if the wheel size is calibrated only by GPS? This makes the unit unsuitable for indoor and track use. Shame as it is has such a potential to be a fantastic product.

  • Look at the last line- that's what changed!!!

    Beta 3.14

    Change History

Tightened proximity pairing for sensors and added prompt to accept/reject new sensor
Fixed an issue which could the device to get caught in a loop of notifying the user that a speed/cadence sensor was connected
Adds basic support for Bontrager headlight/taillight
Adds tone to a sensor prompt

Bought an Edge 25 today :(

I have the same problem with a brand new Edge bought today with the speed/cadence kit.

Great little device, but this speed sensor problem is already annoying me and I haven't even had the Edge running on the road yet!

Upgraded to v3.14 beta, but apart from the sensors being detected better (I reckon) and the extra feature of being able to remove the paired sensors before re-adding them, the issue with the speed sensor not being used when the GPS is active is alive and well.

    Argh!

I really like the design and features of the Edge 25. I really don't want to have to go back to the shop with it as there's nothing I can see in the same price bracket that is as good. I've sent in an email bug report.

Please Garmin - have another crack at fixing this!

    Be Paitent

    Hi Guys,

Cyclenoob it is a great unit and it will be fixed. I feel your frustration. We all know it is a great little unit so hold a bit longer and I am sure Garmin will have it all sorted. You just need to give them feedback so they can see where the issue lies.

I cannot update my unit as it is an Asian version so I have to wait for an official release via Garmin Express. I should be frustrated but I am happy with the communication I have had with the EdgeBeta team as they have helped me understand why mine was not working. It took like five emails and I even sent some videos in but we got there in the end. This leads me to believe they are actively working on a resolution. Also seeing they have released Beta 3.13 & 3.14 in quick succession is a good thing.

If I have to wait a few weeks for an official release I am not too fussed as I know it will make a great unit even better. I have never had a problem with it running over GPS and GLONASS, I will just have to wait a while to get the speed sensor reading distance.

MCZedz if I used it only indoors I would be frustrated too but the unit can be easily calibrated outdoors you just have to ride with the speed sensor connected and GPS on for 2kms (straight line preferred) and it will be calibrated for indoors (well this is my understanding anyway, somebody correct me if I am wrong).

I know I sound like a Garmin rep to some extent but only because I can see progress being made. I still think it is pathetic it took so long since the release of the unit before anything was done but sometime they cannot fix it if nobody complains (to the right channels also).

    Have a good day everyone!

    Hrm

Oh and for everyone with a heart rate monitor check this site, HR data on page one or two. Works a treat!:

Oh and can Garmin give and option in Connect to change the sampling rate from Smart to 1 Second.

    :)

How does one find out if the device is an Asian (or whatever other versions are there) version?

How do you know its not working..... It seems to be working for me so i am curious if i am looking at this correctly to tell if it working correctly or not

    Asian Version

itisravi it is an asian version if you purchased it from ebay and it came from HK or China. The device has chineese characters on the back of the unit and not english.
