Edge 25 and Speed Sensor setup issues

what is the proper way to get the magnetless speed sensor to work correctly?
I installed the sensor, my Edge 25 detects it right way, but it doesnt seem to do anything. All the time while riding in the forest my speed will drop to 0.0, and my mileage is way off at the end. If I lift the front of my bike and spin the tire it doesnt display any speed numbers.

My buddy has a 520 with the same sensor and his works perfect. If he spins his front tire the speed shows up and at the end of a ride he might show "12.2 miles" where as my unit will show "6.6miles".

Any tips or suggestions? I'm new to all this not sure what is wrong. Do I need to ride in the streets for a bit so the unit can calibrate properly? I dont see an option on the Edge 25 to manually put in tire size like the 520 has.
  • With the 3.14 beta mine now uses the wheel speed sensor correctly when GPS is turned on. Tried this inside the garage so the proof of how well it works will be on the next ride. Also curious as to whether the wheel speed data being better at detecting changes of speed, whether the "Smart" recording will now save data more often?

    Sampling Rate

    Hi teK,

This is the reply I got from garmin beta:

The device is still sampling data at once per second so the data should still be accurate. It just writes a summary message approx. every 5 seconds in smart recording mode. The issue has been a requirement that we have to store x number of activities based on our available space. I will pass this request on to the program managers for future consideration.

I guess all you can do is message Garmin and let them know this is what we want. The more people that request it the sooner it will be done - hopefully! Looks like the unit is more than capable of this function just would not store many activities - when I connect my unit it looks link it only has 4MB of storage - seems tiny in this day and age with memory being so cheap! Personally I'm happy to sync my device more often to get more accurate data, especially now that you can sync with your smartphone via Bluetooth.

    3.30 Update?

    Hi,

Just synced with my laptop and updated to 3.30. (I just used the Garmin Express software that came with the unit to sync and update, then the unit just updates when you unplug from the USB and reboots with the setting showing 3.30 on the about tab.)

Will post an update later this week to see how this has fixed things.

I was about to send my speed sensor and cadence sensor back too.

Thanks Garmin if you have fixed this. :D

Speed sensor seems to be working fine with fw 3.30

Speed sensor seems to be working fine with fw 3.30 for me.

I'm using VeloComputer sensor flashed to ANT-only firmware. When the sensor is newly paired, I get a short info message on the Edge's display after riding few hundreds meters saying something, probably that the speed sensor is calibrated (couldn't read it properly, only showed for a very short moment). Then it works as expected. I am riding through one place in dense forest where the unit typically looses GPS signal and auto-pauses and this no longer happens with speed sensor.

Found one issue with pairing the sensors though. I tried the new function to delete all paired sensors and that seems to be working fine, but then the Edge is not able to detect those sensors again after using this function. I had to restart the Edge and then it detected the sensors immediately.

    Speed sensor and 3.30 version

Even though I have upgraded my Edge25 to the 3.30 version, the speed sensor doesn't work properly. It works only in the GPS off mode. I can't understand how it works for someone but not for everyone. I think that the firmware is correctly installed. Would you tell me if there is any hard-reset option and how I can get it!

About freaking time. Had stopped getting on here to see if the issue was fixed because it did nothing but cause me aggravation. Last time I connected via USB and flashed firmware was a couple of weeks ago, so I should be on at least v 3.14 I think? Maybe even 3.30, really wasn't paying attention. Speed sensor didn't seem to be working properly outdoors last weekend, speeds were all over the place when I got into tree cover. Going to check software version and update to 3.30 if needed. Do I need to delete the sensor and then reconnect and calibrate?

Davono, you can read the firmware version on the unit itself. If it says 3.30 then you installed it correctly.

Davono, make sure the green light on your speed sensor is coming on. Mine wasn't connecting to the unit, spun it and no green light. Suspect it's a dead battery.

Yep. Replaced the battery, speed sensor connected. Spun the wheel while in ride mode and it gave me MPH so assuming it's good to go. WIll see if it self-calibrates next time I take road bike out. This is with Ver 3.30 firmware installed.

Speed sensor working as it should with 3.30 firmware, yea! Well, almost. Had auto pause on today, and several times it auto paused then auto resumed while moving. I assume it was the speed sensor briefly losing contact with the unit. Anyone else had this issue?

In my experience the device does not auto pause when it looses connection to sensor. Lost connection -> no information about revolutions -> can't just assume bike stopped. It falls back to GPS-based speed instead. I believe what happened to you was that your device lost connection with sensor AND it lost GPS signal at the same time. Device would have to receive two consecutive packets from speed sensor with the same number of revolutions to assume zero speed.

Upon further review, I don't think it's related to the speed sensor at all. At least part of it something that's been happening since I upgraded to V 3.30 firmware, both with and without speed sensor connected. Wasn't paying close attention so I didn't notice it until this weekend. Just posted a thread about it, would like to see if anyone else's data shows same thing.
