1030 TBT is broken

This problem is since at least 7.4, but I'm pretty sure it started before that. I'm using the latest official maps and have tried the 7.41 beta which didn't help at all.

I recently used some routes that I know worked previously, because I designed and used them. However, lately TBT is completely broken. When I ride the route the entire time it shows distance to destination as the full route length, and distance to next turn as 12 feet or so. It never pops up the map for TBT directions as it should, and I have to keep the map screen up to avoid mising turns. It does show little the popups for turns if there is a cue sheet, but they are so brief and don't happen far enough in advance. I need it to switch to the map screen and display the turn in 50m advance like it always has in the past.

I'm grateful for all that Garmin support has done for me lately, but OMG when are they going to stop with the crappy software quality. I'm really glad DC Rainmaker has called them out for it. It's time they join the rest of the industry in software best practices and provide reasonably stable products to their customers. Once again I find myself considering Wahoo. Many of my friends use it and are quite happy with it, claiming they never have issues.

  • I've tried to force software install thru websync. It looks like it is working when I started the course at home. We will see tomorrow at my ride.
If not I will try your solution - Thanks Dean :)

  • I had the problem yesterday and a hard reboot got it to work.

A "hard reboot" is holding the on/off button until the device turns off and restarts.

Not an ideal solution but better than not working at all.

Ideally, you'd do this very early in the ride so the recording of the ride isn't too messed up.

    ==============

I've been on group rides where my unit is the only one having a problem,

  • I haven't experienced the problem with TBT. I'm wondering if those experiencing TBT issues are placing the 1030 in sleep mode or completely turning it off at the end of each activity.  I always completely turn off the 1030 since it has such a short start up time.

  • No, I'm turning it off completely.

  • I turn mine off completely. This is not user error. It's a bug. I've been using the 1030 since 12/2017 and this problem is new with the 7.x software updates.

  • This is the best/most reliable solution I have found so far (still a PITA but it works): "Last week I got it to work by force rebooting the Garmin AFTER I loaded and started the route. Today I loaded and started a map, and began my ride. As before TBT failed to work. With the TBT route and ride still running, I did a force reboot (i.e. holding down power button until the unit powers off and restarts). After it came up again I resumed my ride and TBT worked for the rest of the ride." - THANK YOU !!!!

  • Thank you SO MUCH for this thread.  I was going nuts trying to diagnose this issue which I thought must be my lack of knowledge.

    It's not me!

My Edge 1030 serial 576171505 purchased 25 May 2019 worked flawlessly on my first "saved course" ride 29 May. [Routable cycle map of the US 2019.10]  The .GPX file created by a friend, was imported to my Connect account, then down to my 1030, where it appears as a .FIT.  TBT worked like a charm.

I then personally created in Connect and saved on my 1030 many courses for Ontario CA and Oregon USA.  By late June, I noticed TBT was not working or appeared to start then stop. For my OR rides it would show the first direction in the TBT banner and never change, even though the map was displaying the route correctly.  I tried everything I could think of, even small complicated test routes.  TBT would seem to work, then not work when I went on a real ride on a course I created previously.  Locations that I had specified along the course would appear in the TBT banner when I got close, but not any true TBT.

I think there were at least 2 firmware upgrades from purchase, through the summer, up to my install of 7.5 on 24 August 2019.  I don't know if there are multiple builds of 7.5, I see only a version number.

Today, I created and rode 2 small, multi-turn test rides with 7.5 and the 1030 TBT worked like a charm.  I started two of my long ON saved courses and likewise TBT seems to display correctly.

Fingers crossed, for my device, the upgrade to 7.5 seems to have resolved the issue of TBT not working properly.  I did not need to start ride/hard shutdown/restart to make it work. I did not do a reset to default of the device.

  • Update - I have now ridden 2 newly created 60km routes and 2 older ones which had the TBT problem.  TBT now works correctly on all.  It recovers from stops/starts and off-course. Easy, as it should be.

I can offer no insights as to what created this problem nor what changed under Version 7.5 to correct it.

For me, TBT now works correctly.  Anyone else?

  • I had TBT "delay' on a 1000, which led me to buy a 1030.  Had the same issue which essentially was a 40+ second lag on TBT figuring out the next turn and indicating on a pop up screen.  After other issues with the 1030, I returned it and purchased a 2nd.  Then and mysteriously, the TBT issues on the 1000 disappeared as well as 1030 worked correctly out of the box.  Excepting that neither it nor the 1000 can maintain a BT_ 1000/1030 connection to my iPhone.
