1030 TBT is broken

This problem is since at least 7.4, but I'm pretty sure it started before that. I'm using the latest official maps and have tried the 7.41 beta which didn't help at all.

I recently used some routes that I know worked previously, because I designed and used them. However, lately TBT is completely broken. When I ride the route the entire time it shows distance to destination as the full route length, and distance to next turn as 12 feet or so. It never pops up the map for TBT directions as it should, and I have to keep the map screen up to avoid mising turns. It does show little the popups for turns if there is a cue sheet, but they are so brief and don't happen far enough in advance. I need it to switch to the map screen and display the turn in 50m advance like it always has in the past.

I'm grateful for all that Garmin support has done for me lately, but OMG when are they going to stop with the crappy software quality. I'm really glad DC Rainmaker has called them out for it. It's time they join the rest of the industry in software best practices and provide reasonably stable products to their customers. Once again I find myself considering Wahoo. Many of my friends use it and are quite happy with it, claiming they never have issues.

  • The issue was not to get to TBT but bad ones. So if you get nothing you either have no course running or TBT is turned off. When you hare on the list of courses, touch the menu button (lower right) and make sure TBT is enabled. Maybe it turned off when you updated. Also make sure you load a course and touch Ride. You should then see a "Calculating ..%" message and the % increasing. If you don't see this message you have not enabled TBT. It is totally doable to load a course without TBT so both things are different steps not to be confused.

  • Same problem. several times the guidance did not start for the route was generated and I could follow it on the map (plot generated). The GPS measured and recorded distance, duration, cadence, FC ... I was able to transfer my output with GCM and I had all my measurements. But I did not have the directions of direction during my exit (they existed and I could consult them but they remained blocked without never starting) and the distance remaining to go remained invariably that of the departure.
  • Thanks, just done a hard reset and tested out and TBT seems to work now, test ride tomorrow evening.... fingers crossed.

    Thanks for the help

  • Hi I'm 100% positive I had a course running, the Edge1030 asked me if I wanted to navigate to the start of the course as I was near.  Checked the TBT settings and that was enabled and I had hit ride....

Just done a hard reset and it seems to have cleared the glitch.

Thanks for your comments though, helped me check that it wasn't me being a Muppet.

  • I am glad you have it sorted out. Hard resets are too often the solution but hey at least you found one.

  • TBT was clearly broken. It was not user error or problems with settings. I have long experience with it (i.e. 37K miles ridden with a 1000 and 1030), and maps that used to work for TBT stopped working at or just before FW 7.20. It appears it's corrected with FW 7.50 but I hope to be more certain when I use a map this weekend. Again, one I have used several times before.

  • I can confirm that after the 7.50 update TBT is still broken.

Last week I got it to work by force rebooting the Garmin AFTER I loaded and started the route. Today I loaded and started a map, and began my ride. As before TBT failed to work. With the TBT route and ride still running, I did a force reboot (i.e. holding down power button until the unit powers off and restarts). After it came up again I resumed my ride and TBT worked for the rest of the ride.

So getting TBT to work involves loading and starting a route, then then executing a forced reboot and resuming the ride.

  • And same thing again today. I started a course, started the ride and TBT failed to start at all. Then I did a hard reboot of the Garmin, pushed start to resume my ride and TBT magically started working.

  • I, again, had the issue where "turn guidance" is stuck at the start. (Course points work.)

    This was with 7.5.

Restarting the route later had the same issue.

Another rider with a 1030 with 7.5 using the same route didn't have the problem.

I reported the issue with 7.3 over a month ago.

The Touring had the same exact problem.

  • I have the same problem. No solution for me
