1030 TBT is broken

This problem is since at least 7.4, but I'm pretty sure it started before that. I'm using the latest official maps and have tried the 7.41 beta which didn't help at all.

I recently used some routes that I know worked previously, because I designed and used them. However, lately TBT is completely broken. When I ride the route the entire time it shows distance to destination as the full route length, and distance to next turn as 12 feet or so. It never pops up the map for TBT directions as it should, and I have to keep the map screen up to avoid mising turns. It does show little the popups for turns if there is a cue sheet, but they are so brief and don't happen far enough in advance. I need it to switch to the map screen and display the turn in 50m advance like it always has in the past.

I'm grateful for all that Garmin support has done for me lately, but OMG when are they going to stop with the crappy software quality. I'm really glad DC Rainmaker has called them out for it. It's time they join the rest of the industry in software best practices and provide reasonably stable products to their customers. Once again I find myself considering Wahoo. Many of my friends use it and are quite happy with it, claiming they never have issues.

  • Yeah, I know about that trick. I always create my routes so that start and end are separated by a half block or so. That isn't the source of my problem. This is a different issue now.

  • are you using a third party map?

  • No, the just the latest official maps installed via Garmin Express.

  • As others have suggested it's as if the TBT process fails to ever start, even though GPS and everything else is active. The map updates as I ride, but the TBT prompt just sits stalled at the start. I have even cancelled and reloaded the map during the ride. What's weird is that it looks like it will start working, but then goes right back to that stalled start state once the route loading/calculation reaches 100%.

  • I have this exact same issue since 7.2. Anytime anybody has posted about it here everyone responds with "mine is working so you are wrong". But it's clearly an issue seeing how many people have posted about it. Trying to get a ticket open on it, but I keep getting "garmin is too busy to chat" message.

  • Whether the map is stock or aftermarket does not seem to make a difference, the unit seems to calculate and show the purple route properly, it is simply the turn guidance that fails to start.

No screens show up with the map and guide prompt like they are supposed to before junctions.

  • You need to be careful. The purple line is not TBT, it is simply the route, or trace file being displayed. It will show if you follow a course with TBT turned off, which is one way to use courses. When you have TBT turned on the Edge calculate the pink like. Both the pink and purple lines are shown on the map but since they are for the most part on top of each other they may be hard to distinguish but if you look carefully, especially in placed where the TBT calculation might have picked a different route, it is possible to distinguish them. Also if your route have been created with a map that differs from the Edge map, they may not line-up and are then easier to distinguish. Anyhow the purple line is totally independant of the TBT calculation. Purple is your route (a series of longitude/latitude points independant of the Edge map), pink is the TBT calculated route (a series of roads and turns as extracted from the map database). The pink line is computed from the purple line.

So the easy guess here is that you have TBT turned off. When you look at the list of saved courses, touch the menu button and the option will be there as a toggle switch - it applies to all courses.

  • Since 7.20 my TBT calculation was broken. I posted about this a little while ago. Last week Garmin replaced my Edge 1030 with a new one because of the Halo screen defect. So I had to reconfigure a new unit. Ever since TBT works just fine. So I am only guessing here that my TBT issue was a FW or map corruption of some sort. A hard reset of the unit might solve such an issue. By replacing my unit that is essentially what I have done. Just a thought for those desperate of getting TBT working again. Maybe going through the pain of a hard reset will help

  • Thanks for the suggestion. It may come to that. It's just a PITA to go through resetting everything. I have numerous devices and and a activity profile with custom screens for each of four bikes. I'll see if the next FW update resolves it.

  • You can backup and restore your settings and profiles

This is the process for an Edge, but it is very similar for the watches, just some of the folders are named a little differently.

On the Edge go down in to the Garmin folder and select all the folders and copy them to your PC. Don’t copy the files in the Garmin folder otherwise you will be there all-day copying maps.

On you PC you have the following folders

Follow the guide below to decide which files you need and where to place them on the new unit or the original unit after a reset.
