1030 TBT is broken

This problem is since at least 7.4, but I'm pretty sure it started before that. I'm using the latest official maps and have tried the 7.41 beta which didn't help at all.

I recently used some routes that I know worked previously, because I designed and used them. However, lately TBT is completely broken. When I ride the route the entire time it shows distance to destination as the full route length, and distance to next turn as 12 feet or so. It never pops up the map for TBT directions as it should, and I have to keep the map screen up to avoid mising turns. It does show little the popups for turns if there is a cue sheet, but they are so brief and don't happen far enough in advance. I need it to switch to the map screen and display the turn in 50m advance like it always has in the past.

I'm grateful for all that Garmin support has done for me lately, but OMG when are they going to stop with the crappy software quality. I'm really glad DC Rainmaker has called them out for it. It's time they join the rest of the industry in software best practices and provide reasonably stable products to their customers. Once again I find myself considering Wahoo. Many of my friends use it and are quite happy with it, claiming they never have issues.

  • This morning TBT worked for the first time with any recent 7.x software version. I have done nothing different with software settings since the last two times when it didn't work. Go figure. At least I know how to get it started when it doesn't work.

The one difference is that it was a shorter course. 42 miles versus 50+ miles for the others that didn't work.

  • My Turn by Turn is also completely broken. Not sure if 7.5 update cause it. I can see the course on the map, but I get no turn guidance. I have distance to next and distance remaining as data fields. They never update themselves. I have tried several different routes that used to work. I also tried navigating back to start and back to my saved home location.

  • No, 7.5 didn't cause it. The problem existed in 7.3.

  • No, hard resetting doesn't help.

  • I did another 42 mile TBT route yesterday and after the course loaded the ride started TBT failed to start again. At the first stop I had to perform a hard reboot and resume the ride for TBT to work at all. So my theory that it is affecting longer routes and not shorter ones is debunked. One 42 miles route worked, one didn't.

  • My 1030, version 7.50, sometimes drops the route I've loaded.

I load the route (copied to newfiles from ridewithgps) press Ride, and start going. No turn by turn, the route has disappeared.  I can browse to the route, load it, and it does continue my ride correctly.

This seems to happen randomly. I've had it 3 or 4 times in the last 20 or 25 rides.  Perhaps I'm hitting Ride, but the group doesn't start right away?   Usually routes work correctly.  I'm not sure if I'm starting the recording from the screen buttons or the bottom right button.

  • Same issue here - seems to be an intermittent problem. A few months ago it seemed to get better after I updated maps (plug into computer and run Garmin Express) but alas the problem still exists! Hard reset also was a temporary fix for me. Come on Garmin, get it together. Great hardware but lousy software is not a long term winning strategy... is anyone at Garmin listening?

  • i see this using routeCourse to load the route. If i download a .fit or .tcx file directly from RideWithGPS it does have turn by turn. There are other issues though, but this one works for me.

  • Same for me, for a few days it's just not working. I've tried to install the maps and also doing master reset. Anybody found a solution for that?

  • It's broken with 7.50 and latest maps. The way I get it working is I load my map to start the course, push the button to start recording my ride, and then I hold down the power button until the Gramin turns off and reboots. When it restarts the map is still loaded. I just have to hit the start button again to resume recording my ride and the TBTb works.

The force restart AFTER loading the course for TBT and staring the ride is the workaround for now.

    Garmin software QA sucks!
