1030 TBT is broken

This problem is since at least 7.4, but I'm pretty sure it started before that. I'm using the latest official maps and have tried the 7.41 beta which didn't help at all.

I recently used some routes that I know worked previously, because I designed and used them. However, lately TBT is completely broken. When I ride the route the entire time it shows distance to destination as the full route length, and distance to next turn as 12 feet or so. It never pops up the map for TBT directions as it should, and I have to keep the map screen up to avoid mising turns. It does show little the popups for turns if there is a cue sheet, but they are so brief and don't happen far enough in advance. I need it to switch to the map screen and display the turn in 50m advance like it always has in the past.

I'm grateful for all that Garmin support has done for me lately, but OMG when are they going to stop with the crappy software quality. I'm really glad DC Rainmaker has called them out for it. It's time they join the rest of the industry in software best practices and provide reasonably stable products to their customers. Once again I find myself considering Wahoo. Many of my friends use it and are quite happy with it, claiming they never have issues.

  • Thanks, but for me the point of a complete reset is to really start over from scratch, taking all of the existing setup out of the equation. Other than activity profiles and sensor pairings I mostly don't care about the rest. If I do a reset I'll just re-pair my sensors and recreate my activity profiles. I'm not yet there though.

  • I'm also not doing a reset just yet, it's far too tedious to set everything up from scratch. I'll first see if the next firmware resolves the issue.

Also it doesn't make sense as this is a new unit replaced due to halo 2 weeks ago, with fresh sd card maps and set up from scratch.

  • I agree. If you start copying stuff back from a bad device you never know if all the files are healthy. The point is to start from scratch. And sure it is a PITA.

  • On my previous setup I also used an SD card but with the new unit I didn't bother since the 1030 has plenty of storage for my extra maps. Maybe the use of an SD card to store maps is causing issues. Just a thoutht. So far no issue when not using the SD card.

  • Typically corruptions if they occur with settings of activity profiles will occur with the information that is cached in memory and not with the physical settings and activity profile files.

  • How do you know this is true for the Garmin 1030?

In general (Garmin devices included) files can be corrupted for all kinds of reasons. Typically due to I/O failures (reading from files into memory, or writing from memory to storage).

  • I'm pleased to report that in my case 7.50 fixed TBT, now it works fine for me with OSM maps.

  • It looks like it fixed it for me too. I rode Opal Wapoo this morning, a 52 mile gravel race just north of Kansas City. The course was not marked, so having a working TBT was critical. I loaded the tcx course map before the ride started, but just to be sure (and based on the theory that maybe the TBT process was failing to start), I did a hard reset to restart the Garmin and hope the TBT process would run. After it booted up it asked me if I wanted to start the course. From there it worked for the ride.

  • @DeanWette Am I reading this correctly, when your Edge1030 updated to firmware 7.50 TBT started working?

Reason I ask is that mines the absolute opposite, TBT was working fine until the Edge1030 updated to 7.50.  Now I get no turn notifications and at the top of the screen it just says i'm heading east on the road I actually started the ride on.  Not a real issue apart from the road I started on is some 20KM behind me!!

How can I get this working as it's a deal breaker for me, would really appreciate some support here, anyone?

    TIA

    Alan

  • Yes, my TBT broke with 7.2 or earlier. Yesterday it worked with 7.5, but I did a hard reboot after loading my map. I still need to confirm it will work without doing the reboot.
