Base runs being recorded as Tempo

Firstly, I’m running the latest version on my 965. I have:

- LTHR = 169bpm

- Max HR = 196bpm

- Zones based on %LTHR

- Auto Detect for Max HR, Threshold, FTP

just diid a 2hour base run with average HR @ 149bpm. The suggestion was 146bpm. However instead of being recorded as base effect it had been recorded as a Tempo run. I find this happening a lot. Can anyone explain why and if there is a fix please? I’ll post my graphs below for your perusal.

If there is any other information you require that might be helpful I’m happy to provide.

  • Yes, pretty sure the last time I did it back in June was with the strap. That’s when got the 169bpm 4.41 pace figure.

  • It is very strange that your LT test took your heart rate very close to your HR Max and didn't detect the LT.. When no detection happens, it can be because the HR Max is too high. I don't think this applies to you here based on your peak HR during your 5k. Also, lowering the HR Max in your case doesn't make sense since the test is pushing you very close to your HR Max already... Am I missing something here?

If the test worked in June, I can suppose there is a problem with the heart rate sensor. The LT test uses HRV and if the HRM is failing, it is possible that the HRV data is invalid while the HR bpm count is OK. A bit like the discontinuous HRV data during the night with the wrist sensor...

What HRM model are you using?

  • Yeah I’m stumped as well. I don’t think you are missing anything there in terms of information - that’s all spot on.

my hear rate monitor is a HRM3 - SS

  • Any chance your have it connected through BT instead of ANT+?

it looks like HRV/R-R data is only available through ANT+…

  • You might be onto something. I connected it via “sensors and accessories” would that be Bluetooth?

  • Maybe. Once the sensor is connected, select it on the watch to see the details and connection type.

  • I’ve just looked at how to setup the ANT+ with the HRM. I am 99% certain I didn’t set it up this way to begin with. I am pretty sure I did this with my old watch (which was the Fenix 5) and this was when I last took the self guided LT test in June. I think this time I must have set it up through the Bluetooth way.

  • Ok! Set it up as ANT+ as try another test! Try to keep your pace steady during each phase of the test.

  • So I went to repair my HRM and have seen there is only 1 way to pair it. I have just done some further research. It looks like the HRM 3 SS is only ANT+ compatible and not Bluetooth.could I be right here?

I have unpaired and repaired. Going to attempt another lactate threshold run tomorrow.

  • It is my mistake, sorry. When I saw the pictures of the HRM 3 SS I thought it was a version of the HRM dual (dual stands for ANT+ and BT) and some versions of that strap don't support HRV through BT.

I couldn't find online info about HRV support on the HRM 3 SS.

If you disable the wrist HR monitor on the watch, connect the strap, are you able to complete a health snapshot on the watch with the HRV assessment?
