Charging problems

Hi,

Yesterday I charged the watch with the original cable on an apple (18W) charger and after 1hour it had 25% more charge.I tried to reboot the watch but no change of charging speed. then i switched to my other usb-c charger which has a max of 60Watts and it still wouldn't go any faster. when i unplugged the charger the watch rebooted by itself. after that i tried another outlet (i think this one is a 15W port) and it worked fine.
Did anybody else encounter such a thing?

  • Charging through USB is actually a surprisingly complicated topic.

Mobile phone chargers often use different voltages to get the fast charging rates: e.g. on this 25W Samsung charger it says the output can be 5.0V+3.0A (which is 15W), or 9.0V and 2.77 A, which is 25W - your watch can only make use of the 5.0V current, so check that your wall charger has sufficient power on the 5.0V line.

Also, there might be a defect involved - possibly your apple 18 W charger can produce sufficient power on the 5.0V as per the spec, but is defective and can no longer do so. You could test with a different one. Additionally, the garmin propritary charging ports on the watches are not the most reliable - especially when the watch is tilted at an angle due to the watch bands. If this connection is flaky, charging will stop and start repeatedly - on previous garmin watches you would have noticed because the watch buzzed when it started to charge, but this feature was removed on the 965...so you can only check the display to make sure the charging icon is there continuously.

  • Ok, after 2 Months' of testing I think my unit may have problems.

When i charge (no matter if I use the usb-c of my macbook or the apple charger, or a 3rd party charger) it starts very slow (like 1% / 20min) If I unplug it afterwards, the Unit shuts down (I have to restart it with the light button) when I then plug it in again it charges normal.

Additional to this problem I used it today on my bike and after 900m the watch switched off. tried it 2 times, same result. when i put it back to my wrist it worked normal... really strange behaviour.

  • Had no such problems with my unit. I use both the USB-c to my Mac and my older USB-A cable to a normal adaptor and have had non charging issues at all. I'd call Garmin support and get a replacement unit. If you do that remember to ask them to send you a unit first (they take a holding deposit) and then you will still have yours until the new one arrives - if that is possible where you are.

By the way , have you tried a soft or full reset of the device to see if that changes anything?

Also look at this post of mine as to backing up your device drive before resetting the unit

  • Thx for the tipp about the holding deposit!! that is one of the reasons I didn't want to do it now.

I only tried Soft reset till now. but maybe i backup the watch before I try it again. the problem is the amazing battery for me. I only need to charge all 14-18 days right now because of lack of training Laughing but before I contact support I will give it 2 more charging cycles.

@S.M.R If u have a bike can u try to just hold the watch on your Bar and start a ride and see if it the watch shuts down in the first 1k?

  • I had it once with an usb-b cable connected to my macbook. After a couple of hours only 1% increase in charge. Unplugged it all and connect it to the other usb port. Then it charged the normal speed. So far it was an hick-up that only occurred once.

Note that not all countries work with deposits. The Netherlands refuse to work with deposits. Even when garmin support wanted my watch to investigate a bug I reorted.

  • OK, at least I am not the only one. Next week I will see if the "hick-up" will be back for me Laughing

  • happen to me also with the original cable...was not starting to charge...unplug several times from pc...nothing ..tried on second port usb from the case

after I unplug from the watch several times( it was well in place) started working ...strange...could be a bug

the port was clean no dirt or etc

the watch is new and also the usb cable

could you please check this and have it fixed ?

  • The only solution i found is using the cable with a computer to charge it. this works most of the time. sometimes i need ot restart the watch to get it to work. i hope that maybe the new software may fix it but I fear its a hardware issue.

  • At least in my experience (Fenix 5+, just 1-2 times with my current 965), charging problems are caused by bad connection on the watch end. Even if the watch side cable seems to be plugged in correctly, there may be some dirt or misalignment causing one of the contacts not to connect properly. The fact that it started working after you unplugged and plugged the cable a couple of times on the watch end seems to point in this direction.

(One time I even managed to plug the watch plug so that even though the cable was connected to a PC, it was just charging the watch, not doing a data connection. Unplug and re-plug again solved the problem.)

  • could be also this or who know....
