Forerunner 955 – black screen, won’t power on

Hi everyone,

This morning my Forerunner 955 was working fine – I even got my morning report. About 10 minutes later, the screen suddenly went black and the watch hasn’t responded since.

I’ve tried:
- holding the Light button for 15–20 seconds (force restart),
- charging it with the original charger.

Unfortunately, nothing worked – the screen stays completely black. The watch was fully charged, hasn’t been exposed to water, extreme cold or heat.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue and found a solution?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

  • Same happened to me, about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I can recover it but then happens again. Useless.

  • I have the same issue.

This morning it was frozen and unresponsive, so I pressed and held the power button until it turned off. Per documentation I then pressed and held it again for 30+ seconds, but the screen stays black and it does not turn on. Next I attempted to plug it into the charger, and press and hold the power for 60+ seconds. The watch is still unresponsive. I have also plugged it into my PC as others have suggested, but as of right now its not being detected by my PC, nor is the screen coming on. I have confirmed the charging cable and outlet are functional.

Really hope it comes back, would be extremely disappointed if this watch only lasts 2 years.

  • have you checked with tech support? do you have any news? I am still waiting for a response..

  • Did anyone get this sorted? My 955 has had a black screen twice in the last few weeks and I managed to restart it. Today I noticed that the watch had frozen twice and I managed to restart it the first time, but now it is just stuck on a black screen. Really annoying. The fact the watch is freezing and the same issue is happening to multiple people at the same time suggests it is a software issue...

  • Actually, I strongly suspect the hardware is failing. There are indications that the flash storage inside the watch doesn't have the expected endurance.

If you put it in the fridge for an hour, and it powers on when cold, it's very likely the flash that's failing.

    Contact Garmin Support.

  • I think you might be right. I managed to restart it after leaving it for a couple of hours. However it froze again today and wouldn't respond at all. So I put it in the freezer for 5 minutes and it immediately turned on.

Contacted Garmin and was told I could pay £145 for a recertified device that only comes with a 90 day guarantee... No thanks!! There is clearly an issue with the build of this watch and I'm not paying another £145 for a watch that will break again.

Alternatively I can get 20% off a full price watch. Which is also shocking given I spent £450 for this watch only 3 years ago. Lost all faith in Garmin

  • There might be some mileage in pursuing the avenue of the UK's consumer protection law. For instance, a premium good like this has an expectation to last more than 3 years. You might be legally entitled to a repair, replacement or a partial refund up to 6 years after purchase (5 years in Scotland).

    www.citizensadvice.org.uk/.../

"Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods should be of a satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. My rights have been breached because the item you sold me is faulty. I would like a repair/replacement/part-refund."

It all depends on who you bought the watch from.

  • Hello.

Yesterday I had the same issue, FR 955 fully charged I used it for 1h running session, and after that It went black and not responding I pressed the light button for around 30 seconds and it turned on but after that in seconds it went off again, not responding anymore to 30 secs reset.

Then I plugged it in and it turned on but charging icon was not showing and the remaining battery was way lower than it was supposed to be, I unplugged the watch and it went off I plugged it back in and it went on again. It was like if it only was getting energy when plugged in.

I decided to unplugged it and let it be for the next day, today, I pressed the button light to turn on as usually and it is working now, and seem to be working properly.

In a week the watch will be 1 a year, I have sent an email to Garmin Support. But it is quite frustrating because I do not trust this watch anymore and the guaranty is about to expire.

    Any suggestions, please.

    Regards.

  • The same thing is happening with my 955 Solar. It keeps freezing and I have to reboot it each time. The time between freezes is getting shorter, and this is already the second 955 I’ve owned - the first one had the exact same issues.
