Not updating most recent version automatically

Hi there

Just got a garnin forerunner 255. The software version is on 13.2 and stares it is fully updated- on both connect app and garmin express. I cannot download any apps as I believe version 15.19 is most uptodate version.

The sites state it should update automatically but it doesn't seem to be the case.

Can ye advise?

  • What they do is build sets of delta files, either every possible combination of upgrade path, or just enough allow to follow a path through the major upgrades until you're up-to-date (either as multiple download/upgrade operations, or applying them one after another automatically in a single upgrade operation).

    For example:

    12.20 (beta) → 12.27

    12.27 → 13.15

    13.15 → 14.13

    14.06 (beta) → 14.13

    14.08 (beta) → 14.13

    14.12 (beta) → 14.13

    14.13 → 15.19

So if you're on 14.12, it would download the 14.12-14.13 update and the 14.13-15.19 update, and apply them in order.

  • Where did you get this information from? I did the update from 14.12 (beta) directly to 15.19 (non beta), even though there were still versions 15.09, 15.11, 15.12, 15.15, 15.17 and 15.19 in between.

I don't want to argue, but you are not right that it is an incremental software update. The file gupdate.xxx in 15.19 has (49,194,515 bytes) and the previous version 14.12 has (30,791,890 bytes.

  • If you are interested, I can send you the file gupdate.gsp 15.19. You can download the FR955 to the Garmin directory and update it to the latest delta firmware.

  • Yes, I am )

Can you upload it somewhere and post a link here?

  • I don't want to argue, but you are not right that it is an incremental software update.

Then don't. Having full firmware images doesn't counter anything about delta updates. Did you even look at the System -> About page about the delta updates?

They can have both ways and most of the users will get the delta's and it's benefit for the end user and Garmin.

I'm interested how have you gotten the full update file? As I think some of the new beta users would want to downgrade, but Garmin doesn't distribute it. And are you really sure that those are full ones? 30M -> 49M sounds pretty huge update.

  • This is how incremental updates work. It may be that the update file is assembled at the server end, but it will be specific to upgrading between two specific versions.

How do I know this? Those who went through the beta updates last year ended up with a different version of the GPS software than those who didn't, even though they were on the same overall firmware version. The (needed) change to the GPS software didn't make it into the non-beta incremental update.

At the very least if a software component was updated in version B but wasn't in version C, using the update file for B-C will miss out that update if you use it on older version A. More likely is that it will refuse to accept the update file.

  • I have the same issue, enrolled in beta , no effect so far. also 13.23 version

  • I just solved this issue for my watch w/ this thread: forums.garmin.com/.../
