Forerunner 955 Keeps Disconnecting from Phone

Anyone else experiencing an issue with their Forerunner 955 disconnecting from their phone - it's happening to me several times a day...the watch immediately reconnects when I open the Connect app but at several times throughout the day I will look at my watch and see the phone icon with a line through it (usually I am prompted to look because I will get a text on my phone but no alert on my watch). I have confirmed I have the most recent versions for the watch and app software and have also tried re-pairing. I am using an iphone 13 pro max on ios 15.5.

  • I’ve noticed the disconnect icon on the watch more and realized while I was actually getting notifications from my phone it’s the Garmin Connect app that’s disconnected not the phone itself.   Sometimes when I open the GC app it will reconnect, but sometimes not … probably 50-50 for the time being.

  • I am using Pixel 5A.

Anyone facing disconnection issues on their watch ? Not that frequent but once every other day. Usually after sleep.

Already delete, forget and add 955 to Garmin Connect twice.

    Using 12.23 here.

I had no such issues on the 11.12 for 2 months. Never had such issue with my 945 and Pixel phones.

  • This isn't a problem with the watch itself. It's more the interaction between the GC app and the phone. If you check the phone itself it will show the watch is still connected to Bluetooth. What happens is that the GC service stops chatting with the watch and that's what causes the crossed-out-phone symbol to appear.

For me on my Pixel 3A, I can pretty much guarantee the GC service will get killed if I take a photo with the phone which requires extra processing (eg. HDR+, Night Sight, Panorama, etc.)

  • Strange I don't have such issue for 3 years with my Pixel 2, 4 and 945.

  • I had the same problem, after turning off automatic management in startup settings of Garmin Connect app it backs to normal - phone always stays connected. My friend with Fenix 6 did the same and it helped him too.

  • Apps get bigger over time, as does the operating system overhead with each update. People tend to install extra apps over time, too. This is why each new generation of smartphone has more memory than the last.

Garmin Connect being stopped is usually a symptom of working memory (RAM) becoming scarce.

Some brands of Android phone have a reputation of being extremely aggressive in stopping services to extend battery life. Disabling that for GC will help.

  • Automatic management on iOS ?

    Can't find such on Android.

Anyway my connection is 100% after 3+ days.

I suspect due to another conflicting app that used BT. I rebooted phone and disabled the app.

  • Can't find such on Android.

Often it's in the app info settings under "Battery Usage".

  • Yup saw that only.

    GC Battery -> Unrestricted

  • I can confirm its related to the BT management on the phone side.

I connected my phone to a new BT device. And bam, my FR955 got disconnected after overnight.

I need to reboot phone to restore BT connection.
