Battery consumption: initial observations?

i know it's probably way to early to start this discussion, but i figure crowd sourcing may yield some insights. in short, after very disappointing battery use, in particular smart watch mode endurance on my 945LTE, i have been hyperaware of how much battery use my 955 Solar is using. just overnight (8-9 hours), i was surprised to see it dropped 3-4%. it may be that the battery gauge is poorly calibrated, but so far, even though one would guess it has a larger battery than the 945LTE, i'm finding consumption not very different.

on the positive side, for my one activity so far, a 70 minute run with Multiband+All satellites, i used up 6% which right on target with spec. (basically zero sun since i ran before and just as the sun was coming up).

i'd love to hear other people's impressions and experiences as some of you have had the watch (just a bit ;) ) longer.

  • I have deleted both Stryd Apps, Stryd is connected as a Powermeter.  Battery Drain has not changed. After every activity, battery consumption ist about 2%/h.

  • i don't have a Stryd, but are you using/displaying it as a ConnectIQ field?

Flipstone has done some tests and the running hypothesis is that it's a ConnectIQ issue...there is a lengthy discussion of this on the 255 forum.

sorry if this is the wrong suggestion...just trying to come to grips with this issues and why it is affecting some and not others.

  • (Stryd)Power ist displayed bei RunningDF7 1 Connect IQ Data Field.

  • then, i suspect this is the source of your problem. not sure of any solution. if you go over to the 255 forum you will see this thread:

    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-255-series/299651/overnight-battery-drain---40

i suspect the only "solution" right now is to use the Stryd as a standalone as Flipstone suggests. but you may want to ask him for more info.

  • I see speculation but no evidence presented for this theory - did I miss it?

On my 255 using Stryd with the Stryd Zones DF doesn't cause drain.

suspect the only "solution" right now is to use the Stryd as a standalone as Flipstone suggests.
  • Yep, as says, the drain seems to be caused by connectiq fields using an ant+ (and maybe also bluetooth) connection. Somehow after the activity this causes a battery drain (perhaps connection not properly terminated? )

In my case it happened when I had either the stryd powerfield, the auxiliary heart rate v2 field and also the ant+ HRM Heart rate monitor field (similar field but by another party).

After removing all these fields I have now tried 3 activities with my heartrate strap connected and no drain afterwards.

Btw, Connectiq fields have acted weird for me in the past with the 955. I once removed the stryd field, only to find stryd power in my activity on garmin connect afterwards. I had to delete the entire page back then. Could have been a one off though.

Unfortunately for stryd this means you can only use it as standalone, the alternative is a reboot after an activity using the connect iq stryd field. This also seems to fix the drain.

Hoping for Garmin to fix this because this in the end is more a connectiq general issue then the specific fields imo.

  • I turn off hrm and headphones manually on watch which seems to help think it's a Bluetooth issue where it continues to search for the devices after you stop using them

  • Did 2 runs yesterday, both with Stryd pod and HRM Pro connected via Ant+

Battery was at 73% after than 2nd run last night, and it’s at 72% this morning.

Haven’t restarted it or done anything different, and I’m also now on the 11.12 firmware.

  • Using connectiq fields utilizing these devices? Like the stryd power datafield for example?
