Battery consumption: initial observations?

i know it's probably way to early to start this discussion, but i figure crowd sourcing may yield some insights. in short, after very disappointing battery use, in particular smart watch mode endurance on my 945LTE, i have been hyperaware of how much battery use my 955 Solar is using. just overnight (8-9 hours), i was surprised to see it dropped 3-4%. it may be that the battery gauge is poorly calibrated, but so far, even though one would guess it has a larger battery than the 945LTE, i'm finding consumption not very different.

on the positive side, for my one activity so far, a 70 minute run with Multiband+All satellites, i used up 6% which right on target with spec. (basically zero sun since i ran before and just as the sun was coming up).

i'd love to hear other people's impressions and experiences as some of you have had the watch (just a bit ;) ) longer.

  • Got the non solar version (with latest firmware update, turn off wifi, no pulse ox and didn't use GPS yet) and notice battery drain 2% a hour. I tried to hard reset by holding the power Button. No succes.  Tips are welcome

  • 6 days till I charged it at 20% have added flipstones battery gauge thing so I can see how the battery drainage goes

  • Which watch face? Try a full factory reset as last resort?

  • Hi Derek, the second one with "gold" numbers. I did a full factory reset. The first ten min was great. After that the drain startend again

  • Turning wifi off does pretty much nothing. Turn off bluetooth if you want to exclude the problem with your phone and the watch. For example, reboot watch, put it to airplane mode and does the battery drain still. If it still drains, then change watch face to something simple and omstart. I think the two main causes in your case would be the BT and watch face.

  • A reboot after an activity has always fixed the problem for me so far...

  • Your issue is clearly different, it can probably be like the Stryd connect iq datafield that continues to suck power. Fabii didn't have activity done.

  • wow. i have no clue if a full factory reset and a factory watch face consumes that much. i've lucked out. i actually am using Connect IQ faces, but i have at most seen 7%/day for a face, with some in the 5%/day range. i have the Solar, but these numbers i cite are for days without any notable sun exposure. for days when i do have sun exposure i get better numbers.

i'd contact garmin and ask for a swap if you get battery drain at 2% per hour for a factory watch face with nothing installed or customized. that's unacceptable and something is clearly wrong beyond what has been discussed here (high consumption Connect IQ faces and sensors/data fields that keep running after an activity).

  • Thanks all, today ill go for a run and see the coming days how things develop.

Need to say, overnight I lost 1% in 8 hours. I turned off my phone during sleep. So this looks good.

  • I own FR955 Solar since one week. I experienced 2 times a night battery drain - about 30-40% per one night. During daytime and activities battery consumption seems to be normal. Have to observe it in more details.
