Battery consumption: initial observations?

i know it's probably way to early to start this discussion, but i figure crowd sourcing may yield some insights. in short, after very disappointing battery use, in particular smart watch mode endurance on my 945LTE, i have been hyperaware of how much battery use my 955 Solar is using. just overnight (8-9 hours), i was surprised to see it dropped 3-4%. it may be that the battery gauge is poorly calibrated, but so far, even though one would guess it has a larger battery than the 945LTE, i'm finding consumption not very different.

on the positive side, for my one activity so far, a 70 minute run with Multiband+All satellites, i used up 6% which right on target with spec. (basically zero sun since i ran before and just as the sun was coming up).

i'd love to hear other people's impressions and experiences as some of you have had the watch (just a bit ;) ) longer.

  • This Stryd theory has been cooked up on the 255 forum and appears nonsense tbh - no excess drain after using it here either  (255 here)

  • Strange, for me it was consistently reproducible... But perhaps it was the auxiliary heartrate fields afterall?

Doesn't seem like stryd updated it since making it compatible so can't be that. Saw matt1206 has the newer firmware so briefly thought it might then be fixed afterall somehow, but you still have 10.10 (even though it's the FR255 music, perhaps some small differences afterall?)

Anyway, of course I can't let this be and now must test again :P Will check this weekend again...

  • I only have the one connectiq field, which is Stryd. I’m using the standard HR field on my screen:

I had no issues with battery drain on the 10.10 firmware either with this setup

  • So i just did a bike ride. That app dont include any data fields from connect IQ. No battery drain after activity.....

  • updated to 11.12 yesterday and fully charged, went to bed, woke up at 97%, i.e. lower than usual. restarted the watch to see if it continues at that rate (3% in 7 hours) but if anything im guessing battery didnt improve

  • And now also a run without ConnectIQ data fields. No battery drain after.

that solves it for me at least

  • I have used a fitcent hrm and noticed it drains a bit more but with the Garmin pod as well as headphones I have depleted the watch in four days with four runs totalling around 3 hours and 2 hours of walking with no pods, headphones or hrm attached.

Update woke up this morning and found it on 35% had installed Amazon music which hadn't downloaded more than a couple of tracks and was showing errors. Also connect app was still open on phone.

  • I updated to 11.12 two days ago. Went for a first (only GPS) activity yesterday (about 25 minutes total), OHR, all other sensors off, watch in plane mode.

Lost 2-3% in a few hours (no tracked activity). Did not restart after the walk. Went to bed with 77% and after 6 hours of sleep it has 62%. C'mon Garmin. Everything is off, the watch wasn't synced yesterday after the walk, phone sync off, wifi off, plane mode ALWAYS ON. What happened...again?!

I just checked the Walk fields - it has Total Calories shown on the watch, but that field is shown as Running index in the Connect app on Android. FIX THAT PLEASE, GARMIN. Both battery drain and wrong display of the fields in the app. (and maps...why touchscreen if we cannot zoom in/out that way?!)

New firmware and yet again I have to turn off and on the watch. Now again I have to worry if the battery will hold during the a few days trip...20 days solar....yeah right...if not started any activity before that, maybe:) I regret buying it so soon...with MSRP.

  • Yep, it seemed they had fixed it at first (only 0.4%/hour after an activity) but after a second one II ran out of battery again after not restarting'

  • after i installed 11.12, i had it draining rapidly (100->97% in only 6 hours). i rebooted the watch and it climbed back to 99%. since then, i'm done 2 runs totally close to 2 hours in All Satellites and now at ~70 hours, i'm at 79% using my typical watch faces.

thankfully, i'm finding myself in a good state with my watch unaffected by the update:

5-6%/day smart watch usage [no pulseox, gesture 20% backlight after sunset, either Coros Apex Like or Minimum Vertical 2]

    3%/hour All Satellites

Solar gives me a nice boost if i'm out there but the above number are my typical office bound life with runs just near sunrise so maybe getting a tiny boost during, but nothing appreciable. (although i wish our watches would report our daily tally of lux-hrs like the Fenix7/Epix2 do)
