Where is the advanced sleep tracking for the 945?

Hello all,

I noticed that the Fenix 6 a while back received a new sleep tracking algo or similar roughly 9 months ago I think? This gave better widgets and I believe a sleep score alongside more accurate tracking. Currently the only thing I don't like about my Garmin is the sleep tracking as it picks up a lack of deep sleep and a lack of me waking up i.e I wake up at 8am and lie in bed for an hour (maybe with eyes shut for some of it) but my wake up time is like 9:08.

Fitbit seem to do this really well and It would be great if this new algo helps this. When can we expect to see it for the 945?

Thanks

Josh

  • Well the moderators did say it's coming,

Semantics I know but the words were “hope to release a beta version in coming months”. Maybe there’s a real problem implementing the widget on the 945.

  • How come they did have a problem implementing it on the Fenix 6? The 945 and F6 share the same hardware and software platform.

Also, creating a widget for Garmin developers should be trivial. I have used loads of 3rd party widgets created by 1 man hobbyist.

Did you mean 'did not'? If you did then my answer would be that it is a different watch.

    There's an assumption that

The 945 and F6 share the same hardware and software platform.

but never confirmed AFIK by Garmin. There must be a reason why the firmware versions are so far apart; the 945 is only on 6.x something whereas the F6 range is on 16.x something. Clearly there is much more to the F6 than the 945.

It is quite possible that the 945 does not have sufficient computational power to do the processing to drive the widget on the watch. I have no idea if that is the case of course.

Like many, I have no idea why the widget has not re-appeared on the 945. However, the sleep data I do get displayed on my iPhone after syncing has consistently shown my sleep and wake times pretty closely. Can't speak for the REM, deep or light sleep numbers though.

  • Correct about the typo.

They did have it running on the 745 review unit that DCR had, so it's safe to say that it's not a computational power issue.

At present, it seems like they may be going back on their word and holding it back for the x55 series.

  • If they intend to continue as Enduro and Rally with small news and big prices by changing the name, it is certainly not a good deal for us users.

  • Garmin you did great in delivering more data fields or Ant FE-C functionality but so far there is still no ondevice sleep tracking you promised to deliver last year. Please tell us when we can expect this finally to happen. I'm quite pleased with the watch and this is the only feature I'm really missing.

Promised or planned?  I keep reading post throughout the forum about Garmin's promise and it's referral to DCRainmaker's article.  This is what he said:

"But, what about others? I asked Garmin just that. Right now the plan is for it to come to all Garmin Fenix 6 & MARQ variants (beta already for that here), and then by the end of the year the Forerunner 945 will also get it. Hopefully we’ll see it expand more broadly than that."

Is there official release that I might have missed?  Promises should be kept, but plans change.

  • Are you Garmin lawyer :) Call it as you wish. The thing is as owners we would appreciate Garmin stance on this one

  • What I'm outraged is the lack of positioning. I had a polar grit x and I switched to Garmin for the lack of new updates and features, but I see that all companies have the same policy of forcing the consumer to acquire a newer model. That's why Apple is ahead of the market in this regard, let them improve the resources for running and battery that garmin was already. Good to remember that choirs are entering the market strongly, take care of your garmin!

I'm not calling it as I wish.  I'm calling it as it is. I said I wasn't aware of any other statements by Garmin and asked if any existed.  You provided none so I think it's a safe assumption your not aware of one either.  If anyone is guilty of calling something as they wish, that would be you.  If I tell you I plan on cutting my lawn this weekend and I don't, I've broken no promise with anyone. If someone can post were Garmin promised us the sleep widget that's great and something we can hold them to honor.  But if it doesn't exist, then everyone claiming Garmin is breaking promises are making false accusations.  Wouldn't you agree or are we arbitrarily changing the definition of words to fit our own agendas?
