Where is the advanced sleep tracking for the 945?

Hello all,

I noticed that the Fenix 6 a while back received a new sleep tracking algo or similar roughly 9 months ago I think? This gave better widgets and I believe a sleep score alongside more accurate tracking. Currently the only thing I don't like about my Garmin is the sleep tracking as it picks up a lack of deep sleep and a lack of me waking up i.e I wake up at 8am and lie in bed for an hour (maybe with eyes shut for some of it) but my wake up time is like 9:08.

Fitbit seem to do this really well and It would be great if this new algo helps this. When can we expect to see it for the 945?

Thanks

Josh

  • I see that all companies have the same policy of forcing the consumer to acquire a newer model

Nobody forces anyone to buy newer models. That's customer choice. Business is there to encourage development and provide customer choice. .

That's why Apple is ahead of the market in this regard

Which market? It's the head of the market for smartwatches but most certainly well-behind in the market for sports watches.

  • Yes, there is snapshot in this thread that shows a Garmin moderator telling us that it was held back due to bugs and will be re-released in the coming months. That was 5 months ago.

  • Read the snapshot and the words were "we hope to release", It does not say will be released

  • What do you people get by trying to defend Garmin? Are you a Fenix 6 user that does not want Forerunner x45 users to have good sleep tracking on their devices?

They removed the feature to fix it. It's been 5 months. The feature works fine on the Fenix 6. If they never planned to release it, they should have not released that statement.

  • I think Apple have changed the game with device updates and continuous feature improvements.
Garmin have obviously done this in years past (looking at my old 310xt) but it was mainly just fixing issues more than adding stuff.

As a customer - we now expect new functions and fixes for our devices during their lifetime (they are a lot more expensive than previous models - so we should expect more enriched features etc)

Fair play to Garmin on the 245,745,945 and Fenix6 series - we have come a long way in terms of the feature set from when I first got my 945, so Garmin seems to be also adopting a 'release and update' model and many models in the same hardware generation are getting the updates.

The main issue Garmin still have is that they artificially limit functions on hardware which are capable of functions. Pay more for stainless, fine. Pay more for a altimeter fine. Pay more for a OLED screen also fine. But paying more (or limited features) for something my current watch can obviously do in software - not cool.

Its gonna be the same with Power and running I bet, power based plans work for bikes (and skiing), and stryd have their own app for power based running - yet I bet that if Garmin release it - it will be for only the next gen (yes we know the current gen can easily do power based workouts)

Anyway - fingers crossed we get the sleep widget soon.

  • Excellent analysis that I totally agree, I'm just disappointed that a new watch at the maximum of its price is buggy for at least a year or more (we all know it very well), the addition of new free functions I would see it as compensation to the beta plan to which all of us customers are subjected even without accepting the purchase.

  • Agree 100% with what Aslam has said throughout this thread.  Jesus H Christ some of of you are parsing like a Garmin lawyer in a lawsuit.  I have nothing against Garmin, but I've followed the discussions on this specific issue on several sites, and the everyman (= non-lawyer) understanding is what Aslam has said.  At this point I expect the 'resolution' of this issue will be a marketing email in my inbox pitching this feature on a new 955.

  • The question here is:
-Watches like Amazfit T REX and Mi watch use the metrics from Firsbeat, a company that Garmin bought itself. Since programmers are unable to insert these features that work very well on Chinese $ 150 clocks, there is only one justification: Bad will.

  • Good point.  I can certainly be persuaded that it isn't bad will (= some problem with the 945 that Garmin can't overcome).  But I need a fact/evidence-based explanation from Garmin explaining why.  The ongoing silence/inaction only makes it easier to believe the other explanations...

What do you people get by trying to defend Garmin?

I don't know what you mean by defending Garmin?  Is it your assumption that I don't want the widget?  I never said such a thing.  So, if you believe that someone refuses to use excuses such as "this watch has it", "for the price I paid", or intentionally make false statements such as "Garmin promised" to gain sympathy and fuel a forum mob mentality for justification on why they're entitled to that feature, then yes, I guess you can say it's in defense of Garmin if that makes you feel better.
