Garmin 945 taking very long time to sync to GPS

I can see from going through the forums here this is a recurring issue, most of these articles are over a year old, is this issue still going on?  I have a ForeRunner 235 and a ForeRunner 935, my 235 syncs to GPS in seconds whereas the 945 over triple the price is taking minutes to find GPS on average, I am on latest software.  Please let me know what I can do about this.  Thanks.

  • No problem. So if you wold like to have all possibilities the 945 is great. I think the 935 was even better with gps but it is a different chip. My setup is for running the 945 with hrm tri und for cycling the edge 1030. If you wold have all the data from running you need the hrm because most data are collected by the heart rate belt.

I have had the issue with gps also on my 945, from 30 seconds to more then 15 minutes was possible, always the same location where I start my activity! Also not related to the weather and also when I try to start the gps at home on the window, as soon as the watch looses the satellite it starts from the beginning. Never found out if it is hardware or software related. After sending the watch back I git a replacement watch that seems to bee more stable, but I have I back just for 1,5 weeks, so no longterm experience with the new 945.

Hey Hary.Good to hear that you found an replacement.

You say you _had_ the issue with GPS on your device. So how long does your GPS now take on the new watch that you received?

  • Did 4 activity and from the second activity on 20 to 30 seconds. First activity gps needs longer but that is ok for a new watch. I think 30 seconds is ok, its hard for me to belive the 5 seconds some people are talking about

Thank you! As I mentioned I also tried different watches (245, 745 and the 6s) and I always got the lock in less than 5 seconds too!

  • In 5 seconds it never worked for me, also not with 935 or edge 1030. Have to try on some other places of its faster there.

  • So from what I can see all this is doing is replacing the CPE file using different steps.  Is it worth trying, has anyone actually given it a shot?

  • Is it worth trying, has anyone actually given it a shot?

Have you tried any of the advise given to solve your problem?

  • With my old 945 I tried all the suggested things.

Replacing the CPE, Factory reset, starting the activity at home on the window bench, syncing with mobile phone before starting, syncing time with gps, syncing altitude with gps

Nothing solved the Problem sometimes I thought I found the solution (syncing time with gps worked 2 or 3 times) but in long-therm the only solution was to return the watch to Garmin.

SO IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH GPS-FIX, SEND BACK THE WATCH TO GARMIN, ITS THE ONLY SOLUTION!!!!!!

And to be honest, if they produce watches with this problem, they should solve it, if problems like this happens to a car manufacturer they have to call all of them back and it is a very expensive watch, not a 25€ China

  • So I actually just ran these steps then tested GPS lock from my window inside my apt.  It actually locked two times in a row in about 10-15 seconds, coincidence?  I'd be curious if this works for others, let me know.

Don't test it from the window. You are not going to run from your window. Test it under real conditions.
