Garmin 945 taking very long time to sync to GPS

I can see from going through the forums here this is a recurring issue, most of these articles are over a year old, is this issue still going on?  I have a ForeRunner 235 and a ForeRunner 935, my 235 syncs to GPS in seconds whereas the 945 over triple the price is taking minutes to find GPS on average, I am on latest software.  Please let me know what I can do about this.  Thanks.

  • As I told you, send it back. You should see the facts: problem wit bt and gps, what else should it be than a hardwaredefekt?

It was the same for me, and in parts you are right, sometimes the Garmin Software is not as good as it should be and the Sony gps chip is crap, I don't feel that it saves battery and it is slow in getting the signal and loses signal very fast.

I don't konw where you live but in Austria it needed 1 week to get the watch back from Service.

And realy 3 iPhones in the time you use the 945? It should be less the 2 years. I know why I don't use Apple devices.........

Let’s not make this personal here.

But I like to add my Garmin experience. I decided to get my first sports watch a week ago and ordered different devices (245,745, 6s and the 945). Every single device had a different issue.  Either the buttons being really bad quality or the screen having issues. Also I had trouble connecting them with the app. Lots of random errors and things like the watch say successful connected and the app not showing the watch. Also the 245 had massive issues with the music getting interrupted every few seconds.

i now thought that I found a good watch with the 945 because it didn’t seem to have any issues just to figure out that my GPS takes forever to sync.

it’s very obvious that the app is pretty bad (see reviews) and that there is a huge quality problem with the hardware itself. Took me 1 week and 4 devices to figure out. I’d still like to get a Garmin watch because of battery life and features. And you don’t need to be a software engineer or any other skill to see that.

  • Congratulation for ordering 4 devices.

Is it really necessary to order 4 and send back 3? Did you know what you do to the shops that get back devices not original packed? Do you know what this means for the environment sending  things without reason? And last but not least, this 4 devices are completely different, have you read the specs before or did you just order an look because you do not know what you need for the activity you planing to use the watch for? Sorry for beeing angry but this mentality drives me crazy.

I might need to send all 4 back because every single one had an issue so far.

  • Dcrainmaker has tests about nearly every device out there. Did you do more then one activity with gps with the 945? In my expirenece it takes more then one activity to stabilize gps. And to be honest the watches are completely different from the bottom end to the top end, from a simple runner watch to the multisport high end device......

Yes I did multiple activities and tried lots of different things mentioned in the forum here. Gps still slow. Fastest was 30 seconds. Longest like 5 minutes.

yes they are very different. If I knew exactly what I wanted I wouldn’t have ordered multiple. But don’t really feel like discussing it here. I hope you don’t own a car, I hope you don’t put your heating on when it’s getting cold. I hope you never take a plane to holiday. Everyone has different standards on what right and wrong. Not sure if this is a good place to have this discussed or judge people on.

Hey kme. Since I am struggling with the same issue. What are you now planning on doing about it? I think it might be worth trying another 945 and see if the problem persists.

  • I did not judge you. And I own a car and also take a plane if I need to and belive it or not I use a heater in the wintertime.

But the fact is, it's simple to find out what the watches do and also read tests about the different devices. And if you take a closer look at my posting you find out, that I also had some problems with garmin devices....

  • I hope you find a device that suits you're needs. As I sayed, it's not easy with garmin but I think it's the same with all manufactorer,  they all have problems with different things. It's long ago since have another device than garmin but I reden a lot of things about other brands. The main question is: what kind of sport are you in? Just running, the 245 should do, if you do duathlon or triathlon, or even swimming 945 is great. In opiniom fenix is to expensive und to heavy for more or less being a 945 on steroids, more for the poser (sorry for saying it this way, but it's my opinion). 745 is somehow between 245 and 945. And than the other questions, what other feature do you really need or willing to pay for. Music, pay..... I have had the 935, great device, my wife is using it now (so no way to get it back :-( . The 630 was ok but touchscreen was bad, also tested fenhx 5 (2. Hand tested it during the 945 was on repair) good watch too.

thank you for trying to help! I am really happy with the 945. Even if it might be an overkill for me. It’s just the GPS that’s the issue. I am not sure yet if it’s a general problem or just with my watch.  If GPS would work better then it would be fine...  If that’s a general 945 issue I might “downgrade” to the 745. Because it didn’t have the GPS issue for me. But I like to have the really long battery life and feature richness of the 945 (even if I might not need all of it). The Fenix series was too heavy for me too. I’m willed to spend any money to get a good watch.
