Can we have weather sync via Wifi instead of sync?

The weather data or widget should load data from wifi instead of having to sync with the app to get the weather data. I know it can be improved. Like, being independent from the sync process.

  • There currently is an option to fix your weather location in Garmin Connect.

  • My Garmin watch has 5x better battery life than my phone even with WiFi always on. So I would rather sacrifice some watch battery life and preserve phone battery life by not having the GC app and BL constantly running on my phone.

Also it does not have to constantly sync, syncing once a day and then shutting off is fine. It probably already works that way.

WiFi on Garmin watches is not always on.  As ben.hartley said, your battery would last a fraction of what it does now constantly searching and connecting to a network if it were.  Wifi has to be manually started before a connection is made with one exception.  After completing an activity, if Bluetooth is turned off the watch will attempt for 1 minute to connect and sync to a configured WiFi network if within range.  As mcalista pointed out, even a manual WiFi sync won't provide updated weather because WiFi alone doesn't provide location.

  • As i pointed out, there already is a setting in Garmin Connect that you allows you to fix your location for weather.

Also, weather data only syncing via wifi when you an activity is uploaded or it is started manually will do.

Where exactly are you finding this setting?  I can't find it.  But even setting a location, you're only getting a fixed location weather report from the WiFi connection. If you're connecting to a home WiFi, the data is only good for your home location if that's where the location is set.  I suppose this is fine if your daily and workout activities are conducted at that location.  I believe the vast majority of people commute, travel and conduct their workouts outside of their home area.  Outside of sleeping, I spend maybe 4-6 hours a day at home.  I believe the same applies to most.   I don't have to travel far for most of my hikes, cycle rides, trail runs, kayak trips, etc,. I also don't have to go far to see changes in the weather. 20 mins west and I'm at the coastline of Puget Sound. 20 mins east I'm in the foothills of the Cascades.  I don't see any benefit to downloaded weather using WiFi as opposed to a phone sync as the OP suggested.  In fact, I believe this is more of a limitation.  What benefit do you see?

It’s a setting in GCM on the phone. In GCM iOS go to Settings, User Settings.Weather Location

  • I see that in mobile.  From what Aslam was saying, I was under the impression that it was a setting in the web version of Connect.  If the setting is only in GCM it's meaningless and irrelevant for WiFi because for a WiFi connection to update weather it would still need to use the phone app to tell the watch which source to use for data.

  • As others have stated, some of do not want our watches continuously connected to our phones via bluetooth. It helps saves battery life on our watches by keeping bluetooth off and on our phones by keeping bluetooth, location and the Garmin Connect app off. Also, some do not want Garmin continuously tracking our location via our phones. Personally, I only sync my watch once in the morning via Wifi.

The weather location setting can be found on the Garmin Connect app under Settings > User Settings > Weather Location

Also for people that must have location specific weather data, a "Sync via WiFi for current location" button can be placed in the weather widget that passes location data from the built in GPS chipset on the watch.

  • The data from the app is stored on Garmin servers. Their is no need for Garmin to query the app all the time.

For example, when I update my weight on my Garmin Connect app, it instantly transfers to the web version of Garmin Connect.

The Bluetooth connection and GCM both have very minimal drain on battery, especially when comparing it's battery consumption to the life of a charged battery on the watch and phone.  Does it save battery?  Of course, but very little and you lose other features available on the watch outside of weather with Bluetooth disabled.

Unlike companies like Google, Garmin isn't tracking your location for marketing or advertising purposes.  More can be found here:

We don't have the ability to connect to any WiFi signal available.  WiFi has to be set-up for our watches in Express.  Most user's have it set up for their home network.  Therefore we're restricted to be within a 100 feet at best of that network to receive a signal.  So, the sync WiFi for current location you suggest as an option is null because your location is your home network location.  If I'm 50 miles from home and want to know the weather for that location, WiFi no longer is an option for that data.  I guess if the information was stored on servers, I could change that location, sync the data with WiFi before I depart for that location, but this seems more of a burden than anything else.  If the trip was further, say 100 miles away, the data would be obsolete by the time I arrived.  I understand your concerns, but I still believe updating weather via WiFi in lieu of syncing with your phone as the OP suggested is putting limitations on an existing feature.  You can always state your concerns to Garmin and request the feature here:
