Forerunner 945 recording massive spike in speed.

Since updating last week each session I have will include either a single or two instances during my workout where my speed is recorded at a ridiculous level (circa 365,000km/hr.)  Has anyone else had this problem?  I tried deleting and reinstalling the watch to garmin connect but that didn't fix the issue.

  • Hi PhilipsHambrook - I'm running GPS v4.40 and see the spikes in the Kayak activity.

  • Actually my last post was wrong, I was running s/w version 4.40 but GPS v4.2 I think last week - I've just updated to GPS 4.40 and will see if that fixes the issue when I kayak later today. Thanks.

I did 2 laps of a 5km course in my surfski today.  same course in the same conditions.  On my first lap I set my 945 in the Kayak setting.  it recorded 2 instances of speed spikes.  On the second lap I changed the setting on my 945 to Bike.  No speed spike.  As some measure of a control I also strapped my old 920xt right next to the 945 on the foot strap.  Apart from the speed spike in the first lap, all other measurements around time, distance etc were almost identical between the 945 and 920xt on both first and second laps.  The only conclusion I can take away from this plus the experiences of everyone else kind enough to reply to my original post is that there is clearly something different in the data reading when the device is set to Kayak versus Bike.  I'm not sure why there would be a difference in the device set up between different activities but whatever it is it must be the cause of the spikes.  If anyone from Garmin is reading it would be helpful to get this sorted.  Until then I think I will keep my 945 on the Bike setting while i paddle.

  • update from yesterday. I've running GPS 4.40 now...I only have one spike today in the kayak activity. Right at the beginning of my workout showing 23mph, after that the speed graph looks right, I was paddling under bridges and trees so I think there as been an improvement in v4.40.

  • that´s funny - I had a spike yesterday right at the beginning, too!

up to 28,6 km/h, afterwards  the correct values around 5km/h

figured that GPS didn´t lock correctly at the beginning because of trees, too ...

but at least not 25.000km/h like before ;)

    SW4.40, GPS 4.40

  • Yes looks similar - at least if it's right at the beginning of the workout you can easily 'trim' the activity in GC. I will keep an eye on it. I'm currently thinking there is an improvement since GPS V4.40.

  • So I thought with GPS 4.40 the crazy speed issues in the 'kayaking' activity had been fixed, but its not fixed its just changed from very large spikes to frequent drops to zero speed. I'm now getting upwards of 10 speed drops per hour, for example I paddle at 7-7.5 MPH consistently but the GPS shows a sudden speed of zero and then goes back to 7-7.5 MPH again. Its been happening for the last few weeks, I'm not getting any speed spikes but this issue is a pain .

I was getting the problem regularly and then 2wks ago it stopped.  Haven't had any problem since.

  • Yes - looks ok now:- in the last 3-4 weeks the v.high readings (and later after the 4.20 update the sudden zero speed readings in the 'kayak' activit) seem to have gone (I have no idea why). I did a normal kayak interval session last night and the speed readings are all ok - no massive spikes or zero's....I'm using 'GPS only' in that activity.
