Spotify

Today Spotify decided to install itself into my watch. I didn't have time to screw around with my watch, so I ran music-less this evening. Now that I'm home recovering from my run I was able to uninstall it, then to set My Music as the music provider. (At least I didn't have to reinstall the music.)

Is my watch haunted, or has this happened to anyone else?

  • Since yesterday Spotify was installed 2 times on my watch. Unwanted. GPS Update didn’t make it...

Also GCM is messing around and wants me to sign in to Spotify the whole time. I don’t even have an account. Don’t like this forced/automatic installation and the way it came out of nowhere...

Now I changed back to my music and won‘t uninstall it, because ... you know ...

  • It's not Garmin watch, after we paid for it it's our watch.

Many companies install sponsored apps on their devices.  Android phones are famous for doing so.  Once the end user purchases the device they can do one of three things. 1.  Remove the app if the manufacture allows you to do so on their device.  2. Disable the app.  I'm speculating, but I believe this is what's happening here.  You're removing the app from sight, put there is still a hidden file for that app on the watch.  If you were to do a factory reset, Spotify would return.  3.  In some cases you're unable to do nothing and you're stuck with the app.  Just because you purchased the watch doesn't mean you now make Garmin's decision on sponsored apps.

  • Are you a 945 user, or just killing time on the forum;

Yes.  I pre-ordered mine prior to the release date and received it around May 1st.  Is there something I said to make you think otherwise?

I guess you are not aware of the battery usage of the 945?

I'm fully aware of the battery usage for the 945.  I've been using the Spotify app on my watch since June.  What I'm unaware of is any higher battery usage when not using the app as other's in this thread have stated.  I get .4 to .06% per hour.

At the other hand, the other things you mention are a bit ...off

    How so?

  • It’s just another annoying bug. If Garmin wanted Spotify always installed in the watch then it wouldn’t have given us the option for uninstalling it!

  • It’s just another annoying bug.

It's only a bug if reinstalling the app on the watch is not intended.  I don't know why it's automatically reinstalling after 9 months, but if Garmin has decided to have the app on the watch now, there's nothing we can do about it except request they don't.  You're probably right when you say it's a bug.  I can't figure out why MDus24 is having the issue with GCM requesting they sign in to Spotify when they don't have an account.  Is this happening to you also?  It's the weekend now, so I don't suspect we'll hear anything official from Garmin until Monday at the earliest.

  • Also GCM is messing around and wants me to sign in to Spotify the whole time. I don’t even have an account.

Just curious, are you using Garmin's "Music Controls" widget?  My husband also owns a 945 and doesn't use music on his watch.  He installed a couple of MP3 files on the watch to test it out and when he has the "Music Controls" widget installed, he was also asked to log into Spotify.  When this widget is removed, it doesn't try to connect.  I also don't use the "Music Controls" widget on my watch and I listen to Spotify or my downloaded MP3's by long pressing the music/down button.  I can no longer use the widget to control my phone, but I don't use my phone for music anyway.  Is this an option for you, or do you use your watch to control your phone?

installed Thursday & Friday for me as well

  • Just happened to me. Saw a spike in battery loss (after I sorted out problems elsewhere). Checked around the watch, Spotify was not only installed but was the default music option. I don't have a Spotify account, don't use it and I had deleted all Music Providers months ago on my watch when Garmin recommended a battery drain workaround.

I deleted it again, set the watch to "My Music," did a hard reset of the watch and so far so good. This isn't the first time this has happened. Don't know why it's doing this.

I've deleted it twice now in the past week. Once via wifi then once thru GCM. So far so good... hopefully the end of that.

  • Happened to me today on my 945.  Way uncool Garmin.  Now I need to reload all my music.  I am pretty sure I never gave the OK for my data to be gratuitously removed like that.  Love the watch, so I'll assume this is mistake. Please do not do this again.
