Spotify

Today Spotify decided to install itself into my watch. I didn't have time to screw around with my watch, so I ran music-less this evening. Now that I'm home recovering from my run I was able to uninstall it, then to set My Music as the music provider. (At least I didn't have to reinstall the music.)

Is my watch haunted, or has this happened to anyone else?

  • We would like to gather some information from uses who are experiencing Spotify issues, specifically with it installing. Please answer the below questions for us if you don't mind to help us investigate this further.

    • Did you ever manually install Spotify?
    • If you have uninstalled this, was this through Garmin Connect Mobile or the Connect IQ app?
    • Was this reinstalled after your first sync?
      • Did you sync through GCM or Garmin Express?

Thank you for your cooperation while we look into this further.

  • Did you ever manually install Spotify?

    Not that I'm aware of.

If you have uninstalled this, was this through Garmin Connect Mobile or the Connect IQ app?

I uninstalled it through the Connect IQ app.

Was this reinstalled after your first sync?
    • Did you sync through GCM or Garmin Express?

I'm not sure what GCM is.  However, I do almost all my syncing through the Connect app on my Android phone.  (I only use Express to copy my music files to my phone, and I haven't added any files in the last couple of weeks.)

  • I'm not sure what GCM is.

    Garmin Connect Mobile app.

  • @Garmin-Blake:

    • I never installed Spotify or any other music provider
    • I have uninstalled it via Garmin Connect Mobile, v4.27.1 and v4.28
    • It was reinstalled after the first sync on another day, e.g. morning sync
      • the sync is always done via GCM
      • it keeps reinstalling, but not on the same day as it is uninstalled via GCM
  • Hi Garmin-Blake.

Did you ever manually install Spotify?

    • No,
      • if I recall correctly, I explicitly denied/removed all music providers when I received and setup the watch using GCM
      • (Later I copied mp3's to the watch using GE)

If you have uninstalled this, was this through Garmin Connect Mobile or the Connect IQ app?

    • Not applicable as I haven't installed in manually myself.
      • After the push last Friday,
        • I removed it as widget on the watch
        • I removed it via GCM (if I recall correctly last Friday & Sunday)

Was this reinstalled after your first sync? Did you sync through GCM or Garmin Express?

    • "first sync"?
      • Not the first sync as I regularly sync; mostly GCM, sometimes GE
    • Last Friday after syncing using GCM a full screen Spotify logo appeared in the widget sequence, after that it was positioned in the widget sequence, were usually a now playing overview is shown.
      • I removed the wigdet

Many thanks for looking into this!
Also I would like to know if this was an accident or a (new) policy. It would be a shame if the 945 would be positioned as smart watch vs. the pure sportwatch I thought it was.

    PS:
Perhaps the following information is useful. You have multiple options accessing apps: (A) via the widget list that you can cycle through via up/down. (B) I also put the (default) music control in the control list (long press button [1]).
Spotify appeared in the widget list (1). I now only have access to the music control via (B) as I removed it as widget.

There are three ways to access music controls, regardless of Music Provider.

    1. Via the Music widget in the widget list
    2. From the controls menu, if added (press and hold power button)
    3. From the shortcut (press and hold down button)

Forgive my confusion from your post, but you should not lose access to any music provider regardless of how you access the music controls. It may be necessary to hold the menu button (middle, left) and switch the current Music Provider.

Separately, we are looking into Spotify installing itself on users' devices.

  • 1) No
    2)Connect IQ app
3)Didn't think to look as I figured uninstalling meant, uninstalling.
3a) How do you answer this? Via BT? Umm as the standard way to sync data, sure. Do I sync via Express? Only when I need to charge the watch (PC running Windows 10).

Listen, this is not exclusive to Spotify, either. I've had watch faces I've installed and removed, suddenly reappear on the watch. Does it on the 945, did it on my 935, and a few times with my old Fenix 3HR. And by reappearing, I mean, I was using it, removed it, and then randomly it was my watch face again. In that case, it was removed via GCM since the IQ didn't exist then.

  • I noticed Spotify had replaced "My Music" a few days ago -- shortly after the last GPS update.  (I don't know how close in time, because I didn't try to use music immediately after the update.)

I had never manually installed Spotify on this watch. (I had Spotify on a prior watch that I'd exchanged.)

I uninstalled through Garmin Connect Mobile.  Spotify has not reinstalled after syncs through GCM.

I haven't recently connected to Garmin Express.  However, I've lost the music previously on my watch, so I guess I'll have to connect and reload my music.

  • I recently bought this watch (few weeks ago). There is an error message when trying to log in to Spotify. Caled customer service and followed advice to turn both phone and watch off and restart, remove the app, remove and re-add wifi connection - none of this worked. same error message.
