Survey for using instant vs step pace on the workout screen

As discussed here: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-945/167532/bug-in-the-interval-workout-screen-with-pace-as-target-the-watch-doesn-t-use-instant-pace the garmin devices show the average pace during a pace-based workout step.

This can lead to issues as I describe here: https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-5-plus-series/172039/pace-target-data-screen-showing-not-actual-pace .

For a meaningful support during the workout (i.e. to keep the target pace), showing the step pace does not make sense (I-our-HO), as it does not give indications if you are currently too slow or two fast. Additionally, on the workout screen on the watch, it is not indicated that what the watch shows is an average/step pace and not the instant pace.

Garmin apparently thinks that step pace would make more sense, probably as instant pace frim GPS is tricky, as not very stable. I agree, the "instant pace" would need to be averaged over the last 10s maybe, but not more. To use the step pace might work for a 30s workout, but if the step is several minutes, obviously, the step pace is not a good indicator if you should go faster of slow down.

We (, myself and hopefully others) think that Garmin should let the user chose on what is displayed on the workout screen (gauge).

This is to find out, what the other Garmin users think. Thank you for participating!

  • , I would also love to have instant pace (or 5s average) on that screen.
Otherwise it's super hard to keep target pace, when you watch tells you to run 3:45 min/km for 00:40 sec. I start accelerate - it says too fast, I slow down - now it's too slow. It's super hard to find constant correct pace.

  • , was there any decision about it by engineering team?

  • Sorry but we all know that the instantaneous pace based only on the GPS is not reliable, at least for now, this whole discussion in my opinion makes sense if the watch is connected to a foot pod that I am desperately looking for but is nowhere to be found. i only found zwift from their site, amazon has no supply.

  • It shouldn't be really instanteneous, could be averaged by short window - 3s average for example

  • Agree with what you are saying here ... Can recommend to look into the Stryd footpods - instant pace is pretty accurate (but unsure if you can display that data field on the workout gauge)

  • You can use Stryd for instant pace and distance. However be aware you do need to calibrate "stryd wind" since it is not accurate out of the box.

  • Too bad Stryd costs half a clock, I don't understand why Garmin no longer produces its own foot pod which was reasonably priced.

  • I know I'm late to this discussion, but I too think the step pace is kinda useless, though in direct contrast to the above poster I think the longer the interval, the more useless it gets. Sometimes my step is "run for 70 minutes at 5:20-6:00". After an hour, I could pretty much be running at any pace and barely shift the needle, let alone move it enough to get out of range and therefore trigger the alert. Pretty much at that point it is giving me no feedback whatsoever, and only at the end of each km do I get any indication of how fast I'm going. Basically after the first couple of km I just ignore it totally. The option for a "current" pace, however it is worked out and the corresponding alert would be far more helpful.

  • also late - I use a CIQ data field called All-In-One that has some selections for recent rolling average pace eg. average pace for the last 10 seconds... I prefer this as it smooths out those short variations in pace but gives you a good indication of how you're going "now"

  • Adding a use case I haven't seen. I just did a long run with an HR target. Since there was no pace target I wasn't getting pace alerts, and with the screen showing step pace I had no idea of my actual current pace. I'm trying to develop my sense of pace vs HR and perceived effort, but can't do that if I don't know my actual current pace.

I've got other screens built with pace, but then I don't get the enhanced HR target tracking.
